We deserve a better eShop.

The Nintendo Switch eShop launched with the console back in 2017. Since then there have been minimal improvements to the eShop interface and the storefront has been flooded with 1000s of new "games", which could often be described as spam. It is now a chore to use with no signs of change, aside from Switch 2.

We asked the community what they thought needed to change to improve the eShop, and the priorities were clear:

  1. Content Filters (too much shovelware, asset-flips and hentai games).
  2. Better Discoverability (lack of options to browse the catalogue).
  3. User Reviews (no ability to review or rate games for others to see).
  4. Faster (load times are slow and painful to browse).
  5. Cart (no ability to add items to a cart/basket).
  6. Music (the Wii and Wii U had tunes!).

None of these sounded particularly difficult to us at Nintendo Life, so we decided to build a new, better eShop ourselves.

Introducing, the Better eShop:

  1. We've created customisable Filters that automatically filter out "spam" games for you, you can help us categorise games by using the 'Report' button.
  2. We've replicated (as best we can) the existing discoverability on the eShop, whilst adding more of our own. Please share your feedback and ideas on different ways to browse games and we'll build those in.
  3. On game pages, you will find both our own Nintendo Life review (if we've reviewed it) and you can now submit user reviews of 50-250 words, along with a score, which all ties into our Nintendo Life game collection system.
  4. Obviously, we've also made the Better eShop much faster to browse, added a dark mode, and optimised it for mobile.
  5. We've added a Cart/Basket system (kind of). You can add/remove games to/from your cart, however as a limitation of the actual eShop you will still need to buy each game individually.
  6. Finally, we added music (if you so wish).

How have you done this?

Better eShop was built in less than a week, and sits on top of the Nintendo Life game database. Data has been collected from various sources and is updated daily. It's quite possible that Nintendo will start blocking us from gathering the data — but until then, we will continue to build and improve the Better eShop.

Known Issues

  • Some data set elements are still incomplete and will be imported over the coming days.

Roadmap

There are lots more features we intend to add in the near future:

  • Wishlist functionality (further tie in with Nintendo Life games collection)
  • Screenshots (display selection of screenshots on the game page)
  • Your Reviews (page to display all your reviews in once place)
  • Mute Publishers (ability to curate which publishers are automatically hidden from your feeds)
  • Additional Regions (currently only support US, UK, EU)
