It's been well over two decades since Ace Attorney was unleashed upon the world (in Japan, at least — the English version wouldn't come out until 2005, so you're not quite as old as this news makes you feel). Ten-ish games later, the series has spawned an anime, a movie, a musical, and legions of Edgeworth-hungry fans.
In honour of everyone's favourite scrappy lawyer, Phoenix Wright, having existed for two decades, we asked you lovely readers, "What's the best Ace Attorney Game?" With your votes, we've put together this list to settle the matter once and for all.
Do you like the classics, such as the original trilogy? Perhaps you're a purist, and you think it doesn't get better than the first game? Are you more of a fan of the updated graphics of the 3DS games in the Apollo trilogy, like Spirit of Justice and Dual Destinies? A convert to The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles after that pair finally made it to the West on Switch? Or maybe, do you buck convention, preferring the spin-offs like Investigations and Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright? (And, of course, there's the secret answer: that Ghost Trick, by the same director, Shu Takumi, is the best Ace Attorney game...)
Remember: the order below is updated in real-time according to each game's corresponding User Rating in the Nintendo Life game database. Even as you read this, it's entirely possible to influence the ranking below. If you haven't rated your favourites yet, simply click the 'star' of the game you wish to rate below and assign a score right now.
Ready? The court is now in session...
10. Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (DS)
Phoenix and Apollo have been hogging the limelight for long enough, and now it's everyone's favourite grump, Miles Edgeworth's turn to grab the microphone. In Investigations, you use Edgeworth's strengths to solve the cases, but you won't be in the court this time — you'll be out on the streets, actively investigating the crime scene, the witnesses, and the potential perpetrators.
Investigations is full of heartbreaking stories and tragic outcomes, marking a very adult, emotionally deep direction for the series. It's not everyone's favourite, due to its differences from the original series, but it's those same differences that other people love. And if you missed it on DS, it's now available on Switch as part of the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection.
9. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice (3DS eShop)
Spirit of Justice is every bit as brilliant as Wright's earlier escapades, with phenomenal writing, satisfying gameplay, and tons of irresistibly clever courtroom drama. The high-altitude Himalayan setting is fresh and fun, and much more than just window dressing; the thrilling Divination Séances are a wonderful on-theme addition, the new characters are as memorable as any in the series, and Khura'in's customs makes for both enjoyable virtual tourism and a constant source of plot-twisting courtroom culture-shock. Whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time offender, no further deliberation is required — this is a court date you shouldn't miss.
Note. Playable on Switch as part of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy.
8. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies (3DS eShop)
Wonderfully witty as ever, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies is another excellent entry into the Ace Attorney series. Bursting with humour and new extravagant personalities, Phoenix Wright fans will find much to enjoy, thanks largely to the excellent skills of the localisation and script-writing team at Capcom. The few minor gameplay additions do somewhat polish the investigation and courtroom experience, but — as with any visual novel — it's the story, character developments, and gob-smacking plot twists that you really play for, and this one will keep you screaming 'OBJECTION' until the gavel drops.
Also, this is the one where you get to defend an orca.
Note. Playable on Switch as part of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy.
7. Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (3DS)
Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney delivers an utterly charming, enjoyable experience to satisfy fans of both franchises; it's a crossover that, when experienced, feels entirely natural. The individual parts are pleasurable and entertaining, as always, though perhaps fall below the exceptional standards of their main-series contemporaries, and there's a lingering sense that more gameplay innovation to blend the two brands could have been explored.
These are minor complaints in the grand scheme of a lengthy adventure; Level-5 and Capcom have done a commendable job. The end result is another 3DS title that exemplifies much of what sets Nintendo's portable hardware and supporting software apart; it provides heart-warming, accessible fun, and entertainment to last for many hours.
6. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (DS)
The fourth game in the Ace Attorney series (and available to play on Switch as part of the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy), Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney puts you in the shoes of a new titular young lawyer, and soft-reboots the series with a seven-year time skip, a ton of familial mysteries, and a scandal concerning one Mister Phoenix Wright. As a marked departure from the Phoenix-focused story so far, Apollo's first appearance is divisive, but a few extremely cool twists in the cases that he defends make this experimental entry one to remember.
5. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All (DS)
The second in the DS trilogy of Ace Attorney games (that originally appeared on Game Boy Advance in Japan), Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All takes the baton and simply runs with it.
A new psyche-lock mechanic was the only real addition — you can unlock these mental barriers by finding clues relating to the secret they contain while questioning witnesses.
This is the middle part of an overarching story — one that's collected together as a whole in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy on 3DS and Switch — but as a short and sweet courtroom visual novel, this second chapter is still one of the best and worth playing wherever you find it.
4. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 (DS)
Finally localised and playable for the first time in English in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection on Switch, this second entry in the Edgeworth-helmed series picks up its predecessor's mantle and improves on almost every aspect (the rubbish Mind Chess aside).
Released in Japan in 2011, you'll really benefit from knowing your AA lore — especially the original trilogy; if you do, Investigations 2 is easily one of the best Ace Attorney games. It paces out its twists and revelations perfectly, giving you an "AHA!" moment exactly when you need it, and the characters are so beautifully written that you feel like they're real, with unique and gorgeous animations for each that bring them to life. One of the series' finest, and a game we're ecstatic to finally have localised on Switch.
3. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Switch)
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is two brilliant games for the price of one, and it not only gives us more of what we love, but gives us something that is visually, narratively, and historically deeper than ever before.
Taking the Ace Attorney back to the late 19th century, there's a bit of a learning curve that you'll have to get on top of to meet the game where it's at, but honestly, we couldn't have asked for a better version of the game we've been wanting for years.
2. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS)
The first in the GBA/DS trilogy, this is a game of wit and humour that appreciates your intelligence and greatly rewards your accomplishments.
Also playable on Switch as part of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, this first game is full of moments where you will marvel at your achievements or cringe as your case starts to fall down around you, and these moments are what makes Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney such a delight to play all these years later.
Nothing beats the feeling of pride and accomplishment you get with a “Not Guilty” verdict and the Ace Attorney series is great enough to make starting at the beginning the only logical course of action. To the courtroom with you!
1. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations (DS)
The third game in the Ace Attorney series was originally released on GBA in Japan, but found its way to the West via the DS in 2007 (and the series has since graced most other platforms you care to mention). The culmination of the original trilogy, Trials and Tribulations puts you back in the shoes of the plucky defence lawyer for another round of convoluted cases and supernatural shenanigans.
Sure, you can play these games on Switch now, but the titular attorney's visual novels hold up well on virtually any platform (except for, perhaps, WiiWare, although you'll have a job getting your hands on that version these days). If you fancy going through them on DS, you'll get no objection from us.
Surprised by the result? Let us know if you think we've missed something; it's never too late to adjust things. Feel free to let us know your thoughts on the ranking above and share a comment about your personal favourites below.

0. Ace Attorney Investigations 2
Now when are we gonna get another collection that has Apollo Justice up to Spirit of Justice on Switch?
Investigations being bottom’s bizarre. It’s a great game imo. I didn’t like the Layton crossover at all despite being a big fan of both franchises. T&T being top is well deserved.
All the first three games are 10/10 in my book, and I'm leaning towards giving The Great Ace Attorney the same grade. But I love all the games in this franchise.
Favorite case? The last one in Justice for All.
Oh... and it's a big shame we never got Investigations 2. Miles Edgeworth is my favorite character, and he has the best theme song (introduced in the case I mention above).
Trials and Tribulations is worthy of being the best Ace Attorney game. The game's last case, Bridge to the Turnabout, alone makes the entire original trilogy worth playing. With that said, I love the Ace Attorney games so much. They're all fantastic.
Apollo lower than Justice for All? Man that's just cruel.
You know I've never actually played this series, but if Phoenix Wright ever teamed up with Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, I'd be all over that.
spirit of justice being lower than Layton irks me (also I have to wonder if the great ace attorney being so high is affected by novelty--it's the New Game and more recent in everyone's mind)
I've been wanting to get into this series for a while, but have no idea where to start, I'm guessing the Ace Attorney Chronicles and that trilogy on switch would be a nice place to start
@Edwirichuu Ace Attorney Trilogy is the first three games in the series so that'd be the best place to start. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles has its own plot and characters so you could technically play it first without any prior knowledge of the series but I'd still recommend starting with the earlier games.
I actually haven’t played the crossover game with Layton. Two series that I played a lot of back on the DS days. But unlike Ace Attorney, I grew out of Layton games. Hard for me to go back to.
Godot is one of the best villains of all time!
Seeing games like Investigations, Apollo Justice and Spirit of Justice so low on the list didn't seem right, then I realized there aren't that many Ace Attorney games to begin with so they can't be much higher. That just speaks to the quality of these games. Dual Destinies is the only one I dislike.
This pretty much matches my personal rankings, except I'd probably put Ace Attorney over Trials and Tribulations, and MAYBE bump Great Ace Attorney Chronicles to the top. I'm still trying to decide but they're neck and neck.
This is definitely a list where there's no shame in being last, though.
I never played Miles Edgeworth. I would have had The Geat Ace Attorney Chronicles top but Trial and Tribs is a great video game in it's own right so fair play.
One microscopic gripe is that I would have had Dual Destinies a little higher (no. 3?) but the list is such a high standard of gaming with no games actually bad or even average. All decent or very good.
Prof Layton vs Pheonix Wright was slightly flawed but enjoyable for me
Again, i just wish the AA series, Pokemon, and Yokai Watch werent whitewashed.
@OldManHermit now there’s a game that needs a rerelease! Loved seeing Birdman interact with the Capcom world. I had it on PSP but would love to play through again.
@Pazuzumas Lol, I had no idea there was actually a Harvey Birdman game, developed by Capcom no less! I may have to track it down.
@OldManHermit it’s on PSP and PS2. The best of the early Adult Swim games. Leave Aqua Teen Hunger Force Golf well alone
1. Ace Attorney Investigations 2
Haven't played Great Ace Attorney yet. Never really got the hype for Trials and Tribulations, I hate the main villain (and not in a good way). AA1 and AA6 are my favourites from the main series.
@Broosh DON'T WORRY I HAVE SOMETHING PLANNED FOR THIS
So would the Switch pack be a good jumping on point for someone who has never played?
The original trilogy are awesome, I couldn’t choose between them to be honest. And I’m one of the 4 people who played them on WiiWare and still thoroughly enjoyed them! If I played them on DS my wife would never have heard ‘Objection!’ while laid in bed and now use the term at me when I do something she doesn’t approve of.
SoJ being near the bottom is a travesty.
Is Trials and Tribulations that good??
I never got to finish it, it seemed to me more of the same, and the first two or three cases didn't get me. The last one in Justice for All set the standard REALLY high, probably, I wanted more of that kind of quality, and no more waffle.
I'm somewhat relieved ME:I is at the bottom. I just didn't find it that engaging and can barely remember it now.
Justice for All seems to be overrated. It features 4 cases, two of which are amongst the weakest in the series. I'd probably swap it's position with Spirit of Justice.
Good list though!
I really think they are all on the same level, so I really don't have one favorite. I am just replaying them on the 3DS (where they can be found all together!). I'm sad Apollo Justice is so far behind, it was my first AA game and I actually like Apollo more than Phoenix... (Don't hit me please)
@AJWolfTill at least the list is user-generated, so I can wash my hands of it! Also, nice dog profile pic.
I am glad the trilogy collection isn’t being rated separately (I’m looking at you Metroid).
At the very least, Spirit of Justice is JUSTICE good as Justice For All and definitely a bit better than Apollo Justice
@KateGray
Dog? That's a Funyarinpa! Apologise to the Funyarinpa Kate! 😉
Keep up the great content!
I played the original trilogy on the WiiWare. TNT is definitely the best but all three are excellent in certain ways.
Interesting - Duel Destinies is my least favorite of the mainline Ace Attorney games. I found Spirit of Justice more enjoyable myself.
Given that Nintendo Life has declared Metroid Prime Trilogy the best Metroid game, logically, shouldn't they also rate Ace Attorney Trilogy as the best game in the Ace Attorney series?
I liked the Layton Crossover better than every one I've played except the first, but I might be biased lol😀
Not a true list without Investigations 2. If we can acknowledge Mother 3 on lists we can acknowledge Investigations 2.
@the_beaver The last case in T&T gives "Farewell, My Turnabout" a run for its money. It's insanely good.
I have a true love for this series. I ordered Investigations 2 in English for cheap and played it on my old DS... such an amazing game also, and always, the music is top notch.
I'd say Dual Destinies and Justice For All are easily the worst two in the series. Justice For All had the worst cases of the trilogy, and Dual Destinies did very weird things to both Phoenix and Apollo's characters.
Top 3 for me are Apollo Justice, Trials and Tribulations and GAA, which is just awesome. Investigations 2 is great but I didn't finish it because of emulation difficulties.
@RushDawg this is a user-generated list. We didn't rank them ourselves
@KateGray
Fair enough, though it does feel inconsistent that Nintendo Life counts Metroid Prime Trilogy as a separate Metroid game, but Ace Attorney Trilogy doesn’t count as a separate AA game.
@RushDawg I had no say in the Metroid list, so I can't comment on that — but ideally, I would have also had Chronicles split into two games!! Most people haven't played them separately, though. It's hard to make these lists 😅
@nessisonett
I loooove ace attorney and layton and I found the crossover lacking in so much aspects that make both franchises so great.
puzzles were so bad and the trials just didn't hit the spot.
But thanks to that crossover, Shu Takumi found inspiration to make TGAA and in my opinion, those games and TT are the peak of the series.
I'm quite saddened with what happened to level5 overseas :c
@KateGray
No worries. Truth be told I’d prefer the Metroid list not have the Trilogy competing with the individual titles in the trilogy. Ideally, I’d also like consistency with how all these lists are put together but it’s really not a big deal. Thanks for making the list and have a great weekend.
Apollo Justice does not deserve to be below Justice for All imo and the same the other way around. Apollo was a great game with great cases and loveable characters. JFA was the worst game in the entire franchise for me personally. It had bad cases, loveable characters at least (expected from the series in general) and really, the whole experience felt rough compared to the game literally just before it.
I kinda feel like it's only been rated as high as it is because a lot of newcomers experienced it as part of the trilogy unlike earlier fans such as myself who experienced it as a standalone game.
That being said, I am not the fun police. The poll was all for a bit of public experimentation and honestly, I don't hate JFA to the point that I don't think it should exist. The more people who can enjoy every game, the better.
Although my PFP might have you believe otherwise, Apollo Justice isn't actually my favourite in the series. My fav is in its rightful place of number 1 on this list, bless.
I do however hope that Apollo Justice soon becomes more acessible to newbies sooner or later as I don't think many can get their hands on the game unless they buy the DS game.
I believe there is a HD version available in Japan on smartphones but not in the West. Hope that gets fixed soon and maybe even bring it to Switch?
Good stuff though. I'm really happy this series has come as far as it has. Never would have thought a game about shouting lawyers would grow with such a wonderful and healthy community but here we are.
Weird seeing JFA ranked 4th overall. Admittedly, it ends on a high note, but that's about it, and even then, it's more a good fanservice-y case than the more usual big plot/story heavy case. Personally, I'd probably rate it towards the bottom with Investigations (which seems to have the same problem from what I've played so far), with PAA, T&T and PLvPW at the top (at least as far as favourites go).
"Visual Novel". Not even the official website (since the GBA versions) call them by this genre. sigh.
"...so you're not quite as old as this news makes you feel."
Yes, I am, regardless of what one may say on an attempt to make me feel not as old as I actually am
Trials and Tribulations and Spirit of Justice are definitely my favourites in the series.
Even the worst of AA is great. PLvPW deserves to be higher though
@BenAV Not really, it should be at the bottom of the list. Still great of course, there is no bad Ace Attorney game. It's a real shame we never got an official translation though, the fan translation is not amazing, unfortunately, the writing is way off compared to Capcom's. Still incredibly grateful for it, of course.
So happy to see T&T get an average over 9! One of my favorite games of all time.
AAI2 is also fantastic - I’d probably rank it somewhere in the 2-4 range
Having SoJ so low on the list is a travesty. That game is awesome and easily one of my favorites in the series.
I really disliked VS, though. That one is personally a lot lower on my list.
SoJ and DD >>>>>>> Apollo Justice
I love trials and tribulations but I loathe Godot. Really wish he hadn’t been in that game. Main reason I don’t replay that one.
Spirit of Justice and Dual Destinies are by far the weakest traditional games in the series, with only MEI being worse. I'm pleasantly surprised to see the ranking putting them rock bottom, and TGAA right by the top.
Hello. I agree with the list. Except for T&T being #1.
I enjoyed my play through of the game, it’s just that I feel as if it doesn’t have the value of other AA games. Anyone see it this way? I always struggled with fans putting this game above the rest.
Justice for All might be the weakest of the three games in the original trilogy, but it has my favorite AA case of all time, the last one.
Edit: I just realised I already wrote a comment about this case in this comment section over two years ago. Time flies.
I could just not get in to chronicles. I dunno why. Got on to the 2nd case on the boat and that was that.
