Update:
Nintendo has confirmed that the NX will not be revealed or shown before or during E3.
Nintendo previously announced that it would release more information about its next system, code-named NX, this year. As the first announcement of any NX information, Nintendo confirmed that NX is scheduled to launch in March 2017. NX will not make an appearance at the upcoming E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles in June and will be unveiled later this year.
Original Article:
Nintendo has just released its financial results, and the reports have some interesting details. Perhaps the most significant is related to the NX - it's confirmed to be launching in March 2017.
The briefing describes it as a "brand-new concept", and the late arrival in the financial year no doubt accounts for the limited impact it'll have in Nintendo's estimates. Many fans had, naturally, hoped to see Nintendo's new system this Holiday season, though by arriving next year it'll avoid a direct clash with PlayStation VR and the rumoured 'PS4K' system upgrade.
Further to that, The Wall Street Journal's Takashi Mochizuki is reporting that NX won't be at E3.
This news is sure to disappoint a lot of fans, especially in light of the limited release line-ups on both Wii U and 3DS (particularly the former).
We have an NX release window, so let us know what you think in the comments.

Sensible from a financial basis, not sure about this nothing at E3 thing though.
This is terribly underwhelming news in all honesty.
Called it.
WATCH DA LANGUAGE!
I suspected 2017.
If they don't show it at E3, they need to have other titles in the pipeline for Wii U and 3DS... otherwise there will be nothing... Zelda can't carry it alone...
Trash.
Day one buy!
I'm content; Wii U is still alive and kicking... at least until the end of the year.
I was really excited about seeing it at E3, oh well. I hope this means that there's going to be loads of awesome unannounced gaames coming to 3DS!
@KoopaTheGamer I mean, it's alive, I guess.... sort of. Kicking is a reach.
Well, darn, here I thought we'd know what the NX is at or before E3.
I was right to believe that the NX wasn't coming out in 2016. I admit, I didn't expect it to be announced for March 2017, but I was still right in thinking it wouldn't be releasing in 2016.
If they are not planning on showing off the NX at E3 this year, that surely means that they'll have more Wii U and 3DS games to announce. This should indeed please me, and I look forward to what games they'll have released for the remainder of the year. My wallet isn't too happy at the prospect of more games to buy later in the year, but as a fan of the Wii U, I'm pleased.
Nintendo what the hell are you thinking. You NEED to be showing it at E3, get the hype going already. Also Zelda delayed until 2017...yeah the Wii U is dead. As it has been for years.
E3 is going to be horrible again. They're not going to announce any new major games for the Wii U with it's successor so close, so get ready for more games developed on limited resources that heavily re-use assets from other titles. I was so excited to see the blow out this year, but at least they've told us in advance.
@Mr_Action ...the bucket, maybe.
@Souldin Nintendo has already confirmed no NX at E3.
There is no way that Nintendo won't show at least the NX at E3. Of course the show will be all about Zelda and Pokemon Sun and Moon , but without new announcements I don't know how excited I'll be.I think that that's why they haven't shown actual footage of both games .
I'm ok with the 2017 launch. The most important thing is that devs have enough time to build up a solid release lineup for the NX rather than it launching at Christmas with a couple of big exlusives and a shallow pool otherwise - that's gonna lead down the same commercial route Nintendo needs to avoid.
And as far as E3 goes, there is currently a number of publishers and studios moving away from it, Nintendo could always handle it online via a direct. Let's see what happens.
Yay. New generation of region locking and purchasing the same game twice is now on the way
@Grumblevolcano Ah, I see I made a mistake with my comment. I already knew that they weren't going to be showing off the NX at E3 this year, but missed out the 'not' in my sentence. Thank you for pointing that out.
My only thoughts are, if there won't be any NX news at E3, they must be showing more than Zelda. Right? I mean, what is coming to the Wii U this year? There is literally nothing I'm interested in.
honestly I don't believe they have so much more to announce on Wii U (maybe they will focus more on 3DS games) because Zelda and Paper Mario aren't enough for me (new Paper Mario does not interest me). Well we'll see how they will play this one out. But for now I'm really disappointed....
@Peach64 Nah, will be better than last year if only because of Zelda and Pokemon Sun/Moon.
Anyways, the NX not being at E3 I think shows how E3 is becoming less relevant.
FIRE EMBLEM AND ANIMAL CROSSING MOBILE !!!!
Awful news. Really wish I wouldn't have checked this site before bed because I'm going to try and go to sleep angry.
i'm fine with waiting until next year, but couldn't they at least give us "something"? It will lunch in less than a year, I want to know what I am going to have to start saving money for
Tbh they could still have a strong E3 with Zelda, Pokemon if they wanted to, the new Dragonball Fusions game..
i feel like hurling profanities at the nintendo japan twitter account. this company seriously needs an activist investor to kick them in the dual screens.
Another boring Nintendo E3.
@AyeHaley - please mind the profanity, partially censored or not. Thanks muchly
I was hoping for Holiday 2017 but this is fine with me; that time of year tends to be a more "affordable" one for me plus gives me time to get through some more games.
The "No-E3" showing however is surprising, to the point I actually do not believe them.
My money is at least on some NX baiting happening at E3, even if right at the end. I mean there isn't much else they can show off is there?
I call a Red Herring!
Sooner than I thought to be honest. Still waiting to see a 3DS upgrade, aka the 'portable' element of NX - we might see that at E3
As I expected. 2016 was always unrealistic.
What in the world is Nintendo thinking, seriously. I don't get why they'd skip the holiday season like that. Not to mention, I don't see them supporting the Wii U until 2017, especially with Zelda out of the picture.
So the focus of E3 will be Zelda even though it won't be released till 9 months later.Didn't Reggie say they will only be taking about games that are releasing soon.Or was he just making that up to cover up for the mess that was last year's E3.
What a disaster. I never realized how much I wanted Nintendo to abandon the Wii U until now. No matter how good Zelda looks, it won't be coming out for over half a year, and the fact that they aren't going to show off the NX means that we probably won't be seeing any new Wii U games. I doubt the 3DS will have a strong presence either aside from maybe Sun/Moon.
This is terrible news. As a big Nintendo fan, they've dropped to the bottom for me as right now. I'm still hopeful about the NX, but I guess I shouldn't have gotten hyped up for an NX-filled E3.
Wait what? While I'm not looking forward to the sunset of the Wiiu how do you announce an official system launch and NOT make that announcement/show off the system at E3? They better hit the hype train hard otherwise this is going to be an underwhelming launch.
@OorWullie It's Reggie. What do you think?
@Ryu_Niiyama I was thinking the same, or this is a crazy business decision or E3 lost more impact than I ever imagined.
Not showing at E3 is a mistake although if they hold a massive Nintendo event that may work. A Nintendo Direct isn't going to cut it if they want to expand on Wii U sales.
So between now and March we have Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and Paper Mario and that's it.I've no problem with waiting a few more months till NX but they have to give us something to keep us happy till then.
I was wrong. I'll admit it.
@Gorlokk 'the fact that they aren't going to show off the NX means that we probably won't be seeing any new Wii U games.'
Doesn't that likely mean the exact opposite? If they are not going to be showing off the NX, then all the focus will be on the Wii U and 3DS. This means that they are more likely to announce new games for those systems. Heck, with the Zelda U delay (likely to release around the same time as NX port), we've already a 2017 releasing Wii U game in the line-up.
I really hope that isn't true, they really need that for this year's E3. I REALLY hope that isn't true. Also, all aboard the train to 500 comments!
I think this is a massive mistake, NX will miss the christmas period, where people might be looking for a new console, launching in march means that no one who does not read gaming media will not know about a new console. PSVR will have been on the market since october and by march will be seen as the future of gaming. So by march the NX will face an uphill struggle.
In lieu of this, I'm expecting Pikmin 4 to come out on the Wii U.
The no holiday release and system straddle of the new Zelda hurts. As much as I love TP, we got a better game once they re released it with focus on one platform. Either this game is going to chug on the wiiu or underwhelm on the NX. Neither is a good option. I am looking forward to the fire emblem release (whatever it is) on mobile though. Seems like a waste of the anniversary as well. I'm gonna strap in and see what happens at E3 but I'm a little confused by the breaking news.
Personally, I'm okay with this. It gives me time to try to finish the games I already own before I'm FORCED by Nintendo to go out and buy more.
Haha whatever. There are still plenty of great games on the Wii U to enjoy in the meantime.
Maybe we'll luck out and get an E3 announcement of Mario Galaxy 3 for Wii U. I'd love for one more Galaxy game to take advantage of the phenomenal Wiimote control scheme that 1 and 2 utilized.
Something tells me the NX will drop Wiimote support.
March 2017..
It's too far away..
Fantastic way to screw up E3 before its even started Nintendo. Not showing the NX is just plain stupid as it's the biggest conference in the industry. God knows your plans to unveil this thing but I have huge doubts you'll make any kind of impact now.
As for a March release, who the hell thought that was a good idea? People are still getting over the costs of Christmas, and you've got to now try marketing this thing at a time when only perhaps due hard fans will buy up.
Also as for games this year, the fact you again delayed Zelda is just gonna mean you obviously have nothing to show of importance this E3 other than a gameplay trailer (at a push) and more Pokemon.
So whats left for E3? More footage for 3ds games we already know of? Amiibo festival 2? This E3 might be terrible for Nintendo
So I guess that means no new games this E3. Or some new garbage titles like Animal Crossing: amiibo festival (yes, I´ve played it, my friend has it). E3 is going to be less exciting without a new hardware but I´m still excited for Zelda and Pokémon Sun & Moon. And maybe they'll make Paper Mario Color Splash like a true sequel to Thousand Year Door... hahaha... ehehehe... no, won´t happen unfortunately.
I´m okay with March release even though I was sure they'd release it in November 2016. Now I have time to finish my unifinished games and play even more Splatoon.
Now that NX is going to launch later than predicted it better have some great titles during it's first year. Zelda will no doubt be awesome but the system needs more than that, especially since it'll be released on Wii U too.
Two lackluster e3 showings in a row would really suck. It felt like they were spread thin last year to make room for an NX blowout this year but no NX this year means theyll have to sell a gallon of water with a cup of milk in it as ice cream
This doesn't look like an early 2016 release to me.
Never fail to let me down, Nintendo
@FragRed
March is an... interesting month to release a new console (or homeconsole/handheld hybrid whatever it´ll be). The latest homeconsole release in March I can remember was PS3 launch in Europe, while it launched in USA and Japan at the end of 2006.
Not getting another Nintendo console at launch, not after the way the Wii U went down.
What's with the Nintendo NX image at the top,is that official?
Well, I don't blame them at all. Nintendo was faced with two scenarios.
Rush the production of the console to please the crybabies and have it ready in time for 2016, with the likelihood that it's not absolutely perfect at release so the crybabies find even more things to cry about.
Or delay it another year and let the crybabies cry about how they have to wait one more year for a console that they will most likely hate anyway.
Either way though, the NX's delay will be declared as the "first nail in the NX's coffin" soon enough.
Damned if you Ninten-do, damned if you Ninten-don't.
Not impressed by these delays. Sure it'll look great for their following financial year but otherwise why? They mustn't be ready. There were rumours that if it was to launch this year that they'd only be able to manufacture enough for a Japan launch. This now allows for a worldwide launch. Still missing out on Christmas is a massive loss and God look at Wii U, it has like 2 games for the next year. The console is missing so many franchises and now you need never even buy a Wii U to play Zelda U. It's possible that NX is the real name, sure why not, it's not bad. And if people thought Wii U sales were already bad these announcements have put the final nail in its coffin. Nintendo need to slash its price to maintain any interest whatsoever.
I sense a triple-digit comment section incoming. I'm also wondering if one year will suffice for me to finally get a damn job. Until then, at least it's safe for me to get an Xbox One for my upcoming birthday.
So I am guessing March 2017 will see the release of NX handheld. I can't see them releasing a home console 3 months after Xmas holiday season. That's not what Nintendo does.
I'm sure they have a plan to release NX in 2017, but I'm more pissed about zelda not coming till next year now
I sure hope that they find a way to make sure the NX isn't overshadowed by other consoles. Since it won't be at E3, Nintendo will need to do a superb job at promoting and marketing it.
Oh well... In the meantime they'll keep us satisfied with HD remakes of Gamecube titles and more Amiibo's...
F*ck off Nintendo, this is ridiculous
I want to know what it will be called.
I like the idea that they won't show the hardware but I'd quite like them to show some game ideas.
Nintendo can still save this year.
By releasing a WALUIGI AMIIBO.
Brilliant! This should give me enough time to finish and release my game Flight of Light for the Wii U, and maybe one or two other small projects too. Might even be good to release in January 2017 as people will be getting all excited for NX, but will need games to play in the meantime until it launches.
I'm happy this period of uncertainty is over. Makes planning a lot easier for devs like me. Hopefully Nintendo will be a touch more forthcoming about the NX in the next few months, so can start to brainstorm concepts for pitching to Nintendo. I figure if they let indie devs like me on the platform, then Summer 2017 will be a good bet for launching a game on there, as it'll be after the initial rush of release titles and in a traditionally quiet period for big AAA cross-platform releases
@MarioLazor think it will be handheld and console later in the year. No chance Nintendo release a home console so far away from holiday season.
They would have E3 2017 to show off software. Rumors are the console will be revealed later this year in there own presentation like sony did with PS4
Well i don't believe we won't get to see anything NX related i just thinks this means the main focus of the show will be zelda which seems like a good thing to me.
As for the march release window next year well at least those complains about the dev kits not being released to those companies make sense now
Probably not the best idea to launch it without having an E3 for it (if it's true that is).
Another 11 months of leaks ,rumours and unknown sources.Fantastic!
@JamesCoote
Have you released games on Wii U or other gaming platforms before? I'm just curious.
I am slightly worried that the Facebook post about Zelda said it was the focus of e3
that's a lot of attention for a game less than a year away. whole lot of empty between now and then.
I've gone from excitement to concern.
I'm... a bit flabbergasted.
I'm ok with this news. It's disappointing not to get it sooner, but think it's the right decision. Here's why-
So many developers have said they no nothing about it. If they're not making games for it we'd end up with software droughts like with the Wii u which will lead to reduced console sales which lead to bad publicity which lead to third parties not making games for the system. More time should mean more developers can get on board.
Also a launch before Xmas means they put out a bunch of big launch titles all in one go and there's always a dip in good games released in the early months of the next year. This way the NX launch in March will have some big games (Zelda if nothing else) and then we'll still get more big games later in the year which should make the flow seem steady. Even though everyone says the N64 had no games for ages all I remember is that it launched in March 97 (in uk) with Mario 64 and by the end of the year we'd also had Lylat Wars, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing and Goldeneye. If the NX has five games of their quality by the end of next year I'll be satisfied.
Also this should (hopefully) mean there will be a bit more love for the Wii u this Xmas. Paper Mario could be their big game, but maybe Pikmin 4 will come? Also wouldn't surprise me if we got a new Donkey Kong Country or Mario Golf or something where they could reduce development time by reusing assets from another game that's already out. Wouldn't it be cool if they ported Mario Kart Arcade to Wii U?
Maybe when the NX releases with Zelda, they'll also have had time to develop a new Metroid game that everyone has been asking for but will instantly complain about the moment it's announced.
Alternative scenario: they release the portable NX in March (like it has happened with other Nintendo portables) and the home console later that year.
Pros: Devs get more time to optimize their games for the system.
Cons: Zelda U doesn't see the light of day until whenever the NX home console gets released.
@Notoriousdrp I'm guessing there will be a NX direct after E3 so it doesn't have to share the spot light with the other two.
However this delay dose now raise the question what about wii U for the next 11 months. Theres only a few games coming and every purchase is now going to be weighed up against the NX in march. We need some rough details and one that certainly would lessen the worry would be "backwards compatibility" reassure us our purchases will carry over to the NX and announce GameCube VC.
It's too soon for me.I still have a lot of stuff to do on Wii U,i'm definitely not going to buy NX at launch.
A terrible release time, a shame they'll miss the Holiday markets. Delaying the Wii U version of Zelda as well is horrible.
Let's hope everything turns out fine.
I'm happy with this news... I'd already said that I didn't think that we'd see the NX this year. Although I am disappointed re the Zelda Wii U announcement...
Part of me is concerned about the potentially small number of games due for the Wii U this year (Yooka-Laylee is now looking like my biggest Wii U want this year). But from a slightly more selfish point of view it doesn't bother me, considering the backlog of games sitting on the shelf or in my library that I haven't even started on yet - mostly thanks to effing Splatoon... So roll on the NX reveal direct either at the end of this year or beginning of next...
@Marce2240 That does sound cool but hasn't the one thing agreed on about the NX been that it is a home console?
@Luffymcduck Yes, I released a game called Totem Topple last year on Wii U. It didn't do very well, but got a patch for it in lotcheck at the moment which adds a tonne of new features and fixes and totally rebalances the game.
I'm also porting the game Gear Gauntlet to Wii U, which my friend made for XboxOne. That's currently in lotcheck too and fingers crossed will actually be approved this time around.
I figured I wanted both to come out before E3 so they wouldn't get drowned out by any NX news or AAA game announcements from other platforms, but seems the former shouldn't be a concern now. Though my fear is still that Nintendo schedule a surprise NX reveal mid May, which would totally screw my plans up.
I'd also like to port more of my fellow indie dev's games to Wii U and long term, my plan is to build a build a business porting Unity games to PS4/Xbox/WiiU/NX etc, whilst making my own games on the side. But we'll see how things go with this first port, and if I can get any more porting work for Wii U considering it is coming to the end of its life. (Got one friend who has agreed to let me port his game, but he needs to actually finish it first before I can begin!)
@Marce2240 that's what is gonna happen. No chance they will release a home console in March.
@Ryu_Niiyama Yes, but I don't think the scenario of the NX (as a concept) including both a portable form factor and a home console one has been dismissed yet.
@kobashi100 I'm hoping so. As @Luffymcduck mentioned, they'd be following the PS3's example. I don't remember that console having a great launch period, so to speak, but maybe that had more to do with the price than anything else.
@Souldin
I could have worded that better... But I'm just assuming that most of the bigger Wii U projects have been moved to the NX by now. It made a lot sense when we all thought the NX would be shown off at E3, but even now in this scenario it still makes sense because the Wii U is on its deathbed right now more than ever, and the only family member at its side is Color Splash, who is just in the same hospital room on the other side.
1. NX launch March 2017 - OK.
2. No NX at E3? - Not cool.
3. Zelda delayed to launch with NX? - Expected, but not cool
Nice. Gives the awesome current gen some more room to breathe.
It makes sense not to release alongside VR but to not have anything about it at E3 is commercial suicide. One of the major failures of the Wii U, name aside, was the complete lack of any marketing.
By releasing no information at E3, rumours will just grown and by 2017 Nintendo will be even further behind in the market and even if the NX is "unique" it's going to be hard for Nintendo to make any kind of profit from it.
If the rumours regarding PS4 and X Box one delivering news of games becoming playable across smart phones and tablets come to fruition, Nintendo could be shooting themselves in the foot.
What would make sense is for the new console to allow Nintendo games to be played across all platforms.
Now that would be a smart move especially if to do so you had to have an NX device. If Nintendo went down that route and attracted fans from across the X box and PS4 user base then they are in a win win situation. Delaying to March next year surely means a completely standalone system is out of the question.
Such a weird news day.
Well this should mean the NX gets the new Dragon Quest game...
https://i.makeagif.com/media/10-30-2015/Mu_dPw.gif
Bu-dum bum bum
I do what I want!
I'm fine with this! I'm still enjoying WiiU.
@Marce2240
If I remeber correctly, PS3´s launch price in Finland was 650 €. That's a huge price and something that hasn't been since at launch. I wouldn't mind paying a lot for a new Nintendo hardware if it's really good.
I am in two minds about it.
I mean, it's great the Wii U had a bit more shelf life, from a selfish perspective.
But to miss the holiday season, and then to miss E3 with the new machine, and any game demo bar one.
Nothing short of lunacy.
What about Paper Mario Splash ? Another Wii U exclusive ? Anything ?
I guess it's a case of wait and see.
Didn't they say last year that a new Pikmin game is almost complete? Maybe they'll release that for Wii U so it has some games this year. I hope they save that for NX though, I want to see Pikmin on a more powerful hardware and push the limits.
Haha I bloody knew it. All those people who have been literally attacking people for months who weren't adamant that NX was launching this year. As usual, they're shown up to be the typical armchair analysts with nothing to show for it.
Ha.
@Luffymcduck 600€ here too. I don't think Nintendo can pull off that price tag, especially if Sony (post-PS2 Sony, let's remember) couldn't do it.
And Miyamoto mentioned Pikmin 4 was in the final stages, yeah. It was during/shortly after last E3, if memory serves.
@SanderEvers I wish it were so, but NOE tweeted about it https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/04/the_legend_of_zelda_wii_u_has_been_pushed_back_to_2017_will_release_on_nx_as_well
@Daemonite It's designed to be a really hard game (in a similar vein to super-meatboy, in that you die over and over, but in a "Oooh, so close that time!" way rather than a onerous "ugh now I have to go back to the start" way). To get really good at the game, you need to learn the buttons by heart, so you can play without ever looking down at the controller.
However, you're right in that not having the colours on the buttons of the GamePad/Pro/classic controllers makes it that bit harder to initially learn the colours/buttons.
There's a bunch of tutorial stuff and subtle clues (such as the damage/health dial in the bottom left of the screen has the four colour blocks/gates arranged in the pattern that corresponds to button positions on the controller), but it's not ideal.
The original developer, Jay, from Drop Dead Interactive, is currently working on a PC version, which has the same problem if people use keyboard or a DS3/4 as their weapon of choice, rather than a 360 or X1 pad. So he's been trying out ideas for putting the button symbols / key letters inside each block/gate. That also has the added benefit of making things easier for colour blind people. Depending on how that goes, will probably patch a similar system in for the Wii U version (as will be too late for initial release unless it fails lotcheck again). The only reason for not doing that already is that some later on levels rotate, making it a bit of a question mark about what to do with the symbols. Should they counter-rotate? That would look really weird and be difficult to implement, versus ending up with upside down A's and B's, which could confuse people.
Nintendo have set a target of selling 800,000 Wii U consoles in the next 12 months. Surely that's an end to the 'Well if NX isn't at E3, there will be lots of new Wii U games' argument? They've sold around 3.5 million consoles a year for the last few years and that's been abysmal. At least with a target of 800,000 they should finally actually achieve one.
@KoopaTheGamer I'm not 100% sure but I don't believe there are any more big name titles still to come on wii u, although I could have missed something. This is very much proof that wii u is dead in the water.
I love my Wii u and it's a real shame it went this way as it is the only console I've had fun playing this generation. I feel as if the games on ps4 and xbox have been unoriginal, uninspired and mostly remakes of previous games. I haven't had fun playing many of them.
Gaming needs something special to bring it back to life if I'm being honest.
I feel like nintendo is fully at a crucial and vulnerable point right now and has reached a crux. i feel like i said this last launch, but that was focused on them needing 3rd party support. now, since 3rd party support is gone, i feel the main problem is they need quality 1st party games. they have nothing left to fall back on (imo).
In all honesty, look back at the wii u. What franchise hasnt been a blatant expansion on previous games tropes? (dk freeze is dk country returns (country etc), kirby rainbow paintbrush is canvas curse, 3d world is 3d land, starfox zero is starfox 64, yoshi is that kirby yarn game w some yoshi story, toad is literally 3d world expanded, , no metroid, no zelda, i can go on for days. the games the wii u released seemed like small project download titles. i feel pikmin, mariokart, and super smash brothers were exceptions, they were natural, realised expansions of their ethos.
the games and franchises that would have benefited most werent there - zelda dq, 3d dk, a proper off rails starfox, metroid. much like how the 64 pushed all their first party titles into utilising 3d and worlds to some extent (dk, mario, zelda, kirby tried hehe) they could have done this but pushed utilising the power of a hd console. the only truly original titles were usually platinum or some sort of pseudo 2nd party. these games have been fine, dont get me wrong, but nintendo did nothing to exploit their first foray into the hd era. they literally sold the wii u gamepad by using zelda as the perfect example.
they didnt even execute virtual console properly. why gameboy advanced? we wanted console emulation, which really has come far too late. It seems as though nintendo scrambled after they released the console and totally forgot to make their own games for it. they have been on the backfoot ever since. i dont mind if you go ahead and make these smaller scale titles like mariomaker, yoshis story, kirby and the rainbow paintbrush, etc, but we wanted some real showstoppers too.
I hope this whole time, nintendo has been putting the wii u on backburner on purpose, trying to make incredible nx games over the last few years, but i doubt it. lets hope they find their footing with new head and can amalgamate the quality i know they are capable of
-these are my opinions please take them as such -
@Peach64
I wonder if they could achieve 800 000 Wii U sales without announcing any new games for the system?
And just like that, I'm nervous again.
Launching in March next year—not being shown at E3.
PS. I said from the very start that Nintendo's next home console was highly unlikely to launch before 2017, and I've personally always thought it was a bad idea to launch any earlier anyway. 2016 was too optimistic of the hardcore fans (and kinda stupid imo, considering they should want the Wii U to be fully supported by Nintendo for as long as possible; as they should with any console), and maybe a bit naive about the kind of damage releasing another new console so early after the Wii U could potentially do to Nintendo in the grander scheme of things imo—memories of Sega after the Mega Drive/Genesis come to mind.
@MajinSoul You don't know about S/M, do you?
@Interneto you mean sun and moon? My hype for pokemon is pretty reserved. The games need to step it up big times. Gen 6 didn't hook me at all. But that might change once I see some footage of sun and moon.
Ouch, it will be a horrible year for Nintendo. Also a pretty dumb move if they are not going to talk about the NX during E3. What else will they talk about then? Paper Mario, Zelda and Pokemon?
Disastrous.
Huh I jokingly said march a few months ago
NX home console in March with handheld unit coming later, devs already said they have seen the console development kit but haven't seen the handheld dev kit yet.
Well, not a big surprise since it has been predicted it could be released at the initial months of 2017 - before the end of the fiscal year, but still disappointing for a Nintendo fan and worst of all no E3 appearance.
It may makes sense when the time for E3 comes. Maybe they will use the expo to meet and talk to the developers and publishers about what could be NX in terms of numbers, concept and capabilities - or even bring development kits - to gain more support. It would work like a slow person to person marketing that may become bigger and bigger even after the console release to keep up a good number of games releases during the initial years, avoiding the scarce releases faced by 3DS and WiiU, or even the recent generation when compared to past consoles.
Plus the Wii U is all but dead , better to get the NX home console out first, although all this being said I believe they will both be launched in March.
March is OK with me , as my wallet is gonna be hurting this year after buying PlayStation Neo and PS VR.
I knew all along it wouldn't come this year so this comes as no surprise to me but with the PS Neo possibly coming out this year you have to wonder how much of the pie will be left for Nintendo. Hopefully the NX is targeting a different audience and has a unique enough idea to it that people will be willing to shell out the bucks for Nintendo's next console.
Cant help but take all this news today as negative. Wii u has nothing left. NOTHING. those who say otherwise are wearing the most rose tinted glasses ever. 2017 for zelda and NX may be uncontrollable but it is gonna tank their profits this yr. You would have to be nuts to buy a Wii U now. I think Paper Mario is the 1 game coming out this yr post June and who is gonna play it on wii u. ALSO is the Zelda demo at e3 gonna be on NX or Wii U ?. Basically the message is to forgot about Nintendo until March 2017. I guess they are hoping 3ds and pokemon carry them through. Gonna be really odd having no major nintendo home console output at all for basically 6 months. Im really down about all of this.
@Peach64 brutal forecast. Wii U gonna end up well behind the gamecube.
@mattmayatt nintendo missing important holiday season!
no chance..
Just in time for my birthday. As long as it launches with a great game or two (assuming Zelda will), then I'll be happy.
But a 3D "action" Mario game would also be nice.
@TheLastLugia
You're right, I mean god forbid people assume Nintendo would do the sensible thing and launch during the holiday season when people willingly spend their money.
A new console generation isn't gonna fix what's inherently wrong with Nintendo.
Nintendo should do a pre-order campaign, where if you pre-ordered the system at Holiday 2016, you'd get a handsome discount or a bonus game (free Zelda?).
@whodatninja That is true. Let's hope they've learned a lot from Wii U.
@Luffymcduck Uh yeah, they don't need to announce anything to sell 800k. Sony sold 2.5 million PS4s in December with no first party exclusives. 800k is nothing.
I never thought this could be possible... Massive shot in the foot... Or NX is reallly great (and cheap) ou your brand will lose significative value to the mainstream audience this year... For me well, PS VR come meet me
Talk about really stupid. So only one "new" playable game at E3 and that game is obtainable only in 2017. What the hell, Nintendo?! Way to disappoint the fans. And we totally called Zelda Wii U being EXACTLY like Twilight Princess, being also playable on the next gen console. Why must you toy with our emotions?! Well... at least we have Sun and Moon news in a few weeks. Seriously, no NX coverage at E3?! Then what's the freaking point?
The Wii U support felt like the end of the Wii era except for nearly the entire freaking generation!!! What is Nintendo thinking?? Master Splinter nailed it in his post about Nintendo producing mostly these small bite games that certainly don't warrant $60. Nintendo really hurt their reputation this generation and as a looooooooooong time life supporter they really seem to have lost some magic. It's "all about the games" however they really didn't deliver like they have in the passed. There are some games that definitely went above and beyond but the pickings are so slim.
The whole no NX at E3 just means they will delay NX for summer so they can have their unveiling or they will do it in directs and get little to no coverage which is on Nintendo. The timing of this all is a MASSIVE disappointment to their fans who in all honesty is shrinking so fast due to mobile franchises blowing up on every device BUT a Nintendo console or portable. Nintendo must think they have something insanely unique however I think it's some kind of miracast to enable gaming to be played on nearly any device. It's no longer about the hardware, it's about the delivery of software on devices that Nintendo can't compete with. Whatever it is Nintendo better be able to deliver some news well before 2017 or the rage is going to be out of control!!!!
I still wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo releases some kind of Skylanders/amiibo type game for Wii U/3DS during the holiday season to fill the void.
They're just treading carefully, as they really screwed up the message on the Wii U launch. It's a shame for this year's E3, but Zelda is massive, and if the NX gets a standalone launch which comes with no competitors to soften it, then it could pack a really powerful punch. Interest is always diluted at E3 in a way, and Nintendo aren't in a position to "steal the show" whatever they put out.
What a shame. I guess I'll see how much dust my Wii U can collect by then. Zelda on Wii U and NX kind of disappoints me to. I guess I wanted Nintendo to move forward from Wii being attached to it. Use some real power from the new NX instead of attached to the weaker Wii U. I mean I had a feeling it was going to be for both, but I was just hoping it wouldn't be.
Not really interested in NX yet.
Pretty happy E3 gets to be about games.
I wonder if they'll have the Treehouse gang there again though, considering all the drama the internet has been generating around them during the past year.
HA! I knew it! I always said a 2016 is logically impossible, but all you doubters didn't believe me. I knew I was right. 8)
Disaster. No two ways about it. The slide into irrelevance will continue. They really needed it out this year.
I wonder how the people who thought the NX would release this year feel. I'm talking about the people who REALLY insisted it would be this year, without a doubt. I wonder how they feel.
And just putting this out there, I've had no opinion about anything NX related. I'm just wondering how those people feel, lol.
I don't think this is such a big deal, E3 is slowly becoming less and less relevant to the gaming audience, and it's not the 'only' route to show-off new games and consoles. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have all used either their own or other events to show-off big reveals, with the latter being a lot more prolific with the Directs we all know and look forward to.
I think making E3 about whatever they have left for Wii U & software for 3DS is a smart move, and is better for them to be realistic than show off loads of stuff about NX and for NX, which could end up being delayed...
NX in 2017 is also pretty sweet - yeah it misses Xmas, but it also avoids direct competition with everything else and Nintendo can really drive for NX to take-off, as well give extra time for their own devs and third parties to get on board. I'd rather they release it with decent titles at launch and then a decent flow moving forward, than pulling a Wii U and launching too soon with nothing to sustain interest.
I'm excited!
@Detective_TeeJay
Nah, I'm fine with 2017 launch. Now I can go trough my backlock and play more Splatoon.
No one celebrates Xmas in March. People spent all their money in December already. No E3 announcement? Just like Wii U, people will think NX is just another Wii. Nintendo is going to launch NX quietly during the idles of March. Absolutely brilliant strategy Nintendo, innovative marketing tactic!
Is it really going to be released on March though? Maybe they'll go all the way to the next Christmas.
Nintendo NX:
Actual launch will be in Christmas 2017.
WHAT?! They have to if they want to compete against the other consoles!
@rjejr
Oh thank goodness, it is just a launch window pushback! I was starting to think they may do a holiday 2017 release or something crazy!
Still sucks of course. But I'm glad it's coming to NX. Better graphics, different controller, and ya, just good to have options.
On an unrelated note, I was thinking yesterday- why hasn't Uncharted 4 shipped out yet? What's going on? Then Sina says "it got delayed, remember?" I was like oh crap, so it did. I had totally forgot lol. But I heard Amazon is breaking street date and shipping 3 weeks early.
Does Nintendo not want my money?
"Focusing on Zelda at E3." Well I guess that's that then. I have no interest in Zelda whatsoever, so this is gonna be a VERY lackluster E3 for me. Although it's great news for Zelda fans I suppose.
@Grumblevolcano
Really? No NX AT e3?
But Zelda is releasing on Wii U/NX in March. If they don't show NX at e3 then when? Cause it's gonna need to be on store shelves by March for Zelda to release on it.
Also, guess this means more Wii U announcements this year? Pikmin 4 perhaps? That would be golden. That game needs a Wiimote
im ok with march 2017.but the e3 stuff makes no sense to me.im not a huge zelda fan,i like it but i need something more
There is so much to do on the Wii U imo. I am super happy and don't need to have constant new software and hardware to be happy. I have a huge backlog and need time to chew through it anyway.
I expected late 2016 so i'm a bit surprised, e3 looks like being a bust this year though
Well, it's still this financial year, so exactly as was previously said (am wondering whether it will be left till March 31st like Miitomo ).
NX had better be epic is what I'm mostly thinking. Seems that there has been a run of disappointment/caution concerning Nintendo that's perhaps set to run a little too long now. Good games are still releasing, but there's undeniable unease and questionning of strategy across social media. It feels time to at least be gearing up for a reveal.
I've had a preorder for Zelda U for at least a year now. I suppose I had better check that that is still valid. I think I'll stick with it until I at least know what the NX is, then decide which platform I prefer. Wii U is a great console in my book.
Team 2017 wins! Works for me as I have a huge enough backlong as it is.
I'll only get it if it has decent 3rd party support and is more powerful than the ps4. If not, I'll wait until the next smash comes out.
Everyone has just blown their money in December. The biggest month for video games sales in the year.
Why would you release 3 months after that in the quietest sales month?
Doesn't sound like the big first step.
Not showing at E3 sounds another mis-step.
Unless this is all misdirection and they intend to release for Xmas and rock E3 in a big way???
I guess this means more Wii U titles to be shown off at E3? I'm excited either way!
They should use their heads and lower the price of the Wii U to 179.99 and then they will sell those 800 thousand units.
Nintendo being Nintendo
I suspected they would announce that info today. I thought it would be launch holidays this year. I was three months out. How silly of Nintendo to miss out the major shopping season. I guess if three more months means better preparation for the launch I can't complain.
MS and Sony released their consoles in the west around November because analysis shows a far greater potential buyer's market around that time. Consumers make an effort.
I thought Nintendo would have figured this out. Oh well.
Still March 2017 makes more sense than holidays 2017. There is absolutely no way for Wii U to survive almost another year.
I guess this means all hands on deck for the NX. There will unlikely be any new major releases announced at E3 on what is now an officially DEAD Wii U. I have nothing against this. Get the NX and its software right. The future is now, the past is the past.
If E3 2015 was bad for Nintendo, without any talk of NX this year's will be far worst. All handheld and phone stuff.
I can only hope and assume that this is the handheld and not the console. However Nintendo better have something if its not going to be a E3. Two losses in a row is not something to look foward to.
So no NX at E3? Yeah, then no NX in March of 2017. Good grief NIntendo, way to wave the white flag for FY2016.
Duh!
AMD GPU and CPU business is slightly behind scheduled.
With everyone complaining that Wii U and 3DS launch games were "rushed", it makes sense to delay to March.
A lot of people were upset with the idea of Nintendo releasing NX this holiday season cutting Wii U short at 4 years.
Also Sharp (one of Nintendo key screen suppliers) is under a massive takeover fight right now.
Nintendo is likely to garner much more attention launching NX in March Globally, than showing it at E3 and launching in Holiday.
Hell. Whats wrong with N? No new console, no new games again?
This is sounds like a handheld device or the portable part of it.
@eeyore
They didn't say they wouldn't announce new software.
They said that Zelda would be the only game they'd show off.
I mean they have a huge booth at E3 they have to fill with something.
But to be fair every year for the past 10 years, Nintendo has essentially been laughed out of E3 by the industry for the games it's brought.
More people would rather go to EA's booth and demo the new EA sports than play Nintendo games at E3.
Also EA isn't showing at E3 this year either, instead having their own event.
Wait...it won't be at E3? Well that seems...odd.
What is wrong with Nintendo? Do they not want our money? NX not launching in 2016 is one thing.. But to not even announce it during E3, and only have 1 GAME... Yes, 1 GAME.. playable? A game, mind you, that is not even due in 2016? Literally what are we supposed to play until March 2017 then? How in the world can they make business decisions like this? This is so stupid, I can hardly believe it to be true. Nintendo has never disappointed me this much before.
NX and Zelda in 2017? Not a problem in my eyes - if they need more development time then I'm all for it (although yes, this is the second delay now).
It also allows those who do not have the time to delve into all of Ninty's latest releases to play catchup (Pokken Tournament, Hyrule Warriors Legends, Star Fox Zero, and even Xenoblade Chronicles), as well as fully enjoy Pokémon Sun and Moon in late 2016 without having to worry about anything else.
However, nothing but Zelda at E3? That's the real disappointing news. Some NX progress would've been the logical move, and any Sun/Moon further developments would've been nice. Perhaps they have one more trick up their sleeve, but let's not hold our breath...
@Aryx
They have a few games scheduled until then.
Including Pokemon Sun and Moon.
Would you rather Nintendo rush NX like they did the Wii U?
E3 attendees will probably laugh Zelda U out of E3 for being too kiddie.
@SM4SHshorts
Pokemon never gets E3 floor time let alone any real time in a conference.
E3 is literally about AAA blockbusters, M-rated games, Call of Duty and Sports.
Now with EA hold it's own separate event at the same they don't even have most sports.
So they're not going to release the NX during the holidays when everyone and their grandmother would want one, and instead they're going to wait until a couple months afterwards when everyone is paying bills and won't be interested in spending large amounts of money on new hardware? Are they daft?
@Xenocity My main point was not that the NX is not launching in 2016. It's about the fact that they are not revealing the NX at E3, and will focus everything on Zelda only. Yeah, sure and Pokemon. But I do not have a 3DS, so this game has no relevance to me. There are literally no Wii U games coming out. Like.. at all.
@Aryx
Well do you want them to rush NX out with rushed games and have repeat of the Wii U and GC launches?
Why?..............
Sigh.........
@Jin15
That's not true.
People spend just as much money now in the U.S. and other countries in Quarter 1 (January - March) as they do in Q4 (October - December).
The last few holiday quarters have been shrinking in spending size while Q1 has increased in spending size.
Nintendo should have March all to themselves, which is also a big spending month in Asia and many parts of Europe.
Hell many companies launch new products in Q1 and Q2 now due to them being less crowded quarters.
Nintendo should actually perform better without having to compete with the Western industry in that quarter.
@Xenocity Can you not read?
Very disappointing news. The Nintendo release schedule this year is really bad, other than Pokken and Starfox Zero (which already released) there's literally nothing for me to look forward to until March 2017.
E3 may be all about ZeldaU (despite the release being 9 months later) but they better have some hefty NDirect's set up. If it's all Pokemon Go and other smartphone games....well I'll be living in a cave until NX is anything other than a rumor-generator.
What a shame.
Also, no way in hell is the tax-return release window any better than the holiday release window (especially for a worldwide release). PSVita and 3DS released during the tax-refund window and they both suffered badly because of it....then Nintendo finally turned around 3DS well into Summer.
Now that I have thought about it PAX is a much better venue for Nintendo to do a blow out of NX information, since the major gaming companies don't bother to show there.
Also PAX user actually like Nintendo and E3 users mostly don't!
@Aryx
I read you.
It's no big secret Nintendo ended major support for Wii U over a year ago.
Do you own all the major 1st and 3rd party games on Wii U?
If not then you still have plenty to play and buy.
if you do well then save your money and find something better to do than gaming.
People always complain about the final year of each console (even from Microsoft and Sony) have no games of any sort from any developer.
There are plenty of indie games and lesser 3rd parties still coming to Wii U.
The only thing Nintendo can do now is rush out the NX and it's games or wait until everything is ready to go.
sigh Well...at least, it's coming early next year. With a release date like that it's gotta be shown at E3. I guess not though... 😞
Just in time for my birthday!
Kinda sucks that NX won't be at E3. I thought it would be there for sure. Guess not
No NX at E3.... the E3 before it launches.... Do they want it to sell worse?
Seriously, with Zelda U being the only playable Wii u game... this may turn out to be one of Nintendo's worst E3
I wish it was releasing a few months later, to be honest, so I could get it on launch, but I am still really excited the release is so close. Great news all around this morning.
Hahaha, at this point I don't know what to say. I thought Nintendo was going to mess up E3, but now it looks like they are done for the rest of the year. What. A. Joke.
@Vandy I think there has to be some huge E3 announcements for the Wii U and 3DS if they're not gonna talk about NX. I have a feeling that Nintendo is gonna come from nowhere and surprise everyone this E3
@ikki5
You like others seem to forget Nintendo is horribly out of place at E3 with the games they make and show.
The gaming press goes to E3 to play Call of Duty, Ubisoft games, Sony games, Take Two games, Microsoft games and Bethesda games.
The gaming press and attendants tend to avoid Nintendo's massive booths for the others.
So what's the point of Nintendo going to E3, when the gaming press would rather being playing "hardcore" games and shooters at E3 instead of playing Nintendo games?
EA is not at E3 this year as is many other bigger publishers.
Maybe this could all be a big media ruse and Nintendo suddenly busts out with surprise NX news at E3 in a couple months. I mean, this is Nintendo and the aforementioned scenario I just painted is highly unlikely given their track record for stupidity and ridiculousness. But hey, it could happen. I guess. Maybe. Perhaps.
I feel somewhat prophetic on this one. Just last night, I booked a trip to Disney World at the end of the year for the family. In the back of my mind, I thought this ruled out NX for Christmas. However, with this news, I have seemed to make the right decision. I am a little disappointed though.
@Pod Yeah! It seems like this E3 will be full of games this year. Which is really exciting I even predict some surprise Wii U and 3DS releases we don't see coming at all.
I'm disappointed for sure. I was hoping, like others were, to get my hands on it this coming holiday season.....and at the very least to see it at E3. I don't understand the release window. I know it may avoid direct competition with the PS4+ or whatever it's called but Nintendo will surely miss out on all the holiday sales. Let's be honest, most Nintendo fans that are adults or have the means to purchase the system will buy it whenever it comes out, but what about the younger fans who may only be able to get a system at Christmas? Maybe this is a stupid statement I just made....I don't know! I'm disappointed!!!

@Xenocity I pretty much have all 1st party releases. I'm not saying they should rush the NX, either.
Like you mentioned; the last year of a console cycle usually does not feature many releases. I agree with you on that. However, it's not like we've had an abundance of releases since E3 2015. Already back then Nintendo's focus was shifting to the NX. So basically we'll have 2 years of Nintendo being like: "Yeah, we're not really releasing major titles anymore, because yeah NX and stuff". But then to still say.. "No NX news on E3 2016" simply is unacceptable. After all those years of Nintendo dangling the NX in front of us, they have to give us SOMETHING. ANYTHING. :/
>>>>>> "brand-new concept"
Scares the hell out of me...
What a couple of asinine decisions!!
1) Man Nintendo is so smart. I mean, why would they show off their next console at the biggest gaming conference of the year? That would be way too much attention! It's much safer to phone in a video about the last 2 or 3 Wii U and 3DS games and ignore that the new console even exists. Talking about the new console would be way too much pressure, and Reggie's poor heart just couldn't take it. I mean, what if they show the NX and get criticized for it? Then they'll look like a bunch of stupid baboons and their feelings would be hurt!
2) Also, since they're not showing off the NX, then they probably shouldn't show off any NX games. In fact, while they're at it, why should they show any games at all? They should only show Zelda. Surely everyone will like Nintendo if they show Zelda and nothing else! That will give people boatloads more confidence in the variety and diversity in their upcoming lineup: showing a game that isn't even due out this year!
3) Oh, and a March launch! What a novel idea! Glad Nintendo has the cojones to do different things from everyone else, even when it makes no sense. I mean, who would want to capitalize on the holiday sales like every other console manufacturer? It's much more innovative to shoot for a March release date, when people are recovering from holiday spending and aren't interested in paying for a 300-400 dollar device!
I jest, but in all seriousness, this thing hasn't even been revealed yet and Nintendo is already making unorthodox, illogical decisions with it. Probably not a good sign.
I don't have a problem with the NX coming out next Spring,
BUT...........
considering that Zelda is pushed to next year (and going to be on NX),
and that Nintendo own forecast for the Wii U is 800K for a whole year,
and only Zelda U is going to be playable at E3,
they literally are screaming "IT'S OVER FOLKS, We don't care to acknowledge that we are killing the Wii U, we hope it has a silent death, and that you forget it ever existed"
Couldn't they just get a grip and be honest with us, promote the hell out of its back catalogue, and majorly drop the price of the Wii U, and give us a few last hurrahs(surprises), instead of going out with their heads down??? That's not honorable, and 13 million people, while not a lot for a console, is a good chunk of people that you should cherish, we took a chance and stood with you, and this is how you let it die?
shame... I still love my Wii U, and its the biggest catalogue of retail games I've ever OWNED (25 as of right now) for one system, but I'm not enjoying the sad lack of performance Nintendo is displaying right now, hopefully it will change, but all this news is a little disheartening.
@FlaygletheBagel I agree with most of your thoughts, but I don't actually think releasing the system in Spring is a bad idea, here's why,
-Sure Spring is not optimal, but the hardcore fans, and tech geeks will always be at a launch, assuring a good number of sales right off the bat.
-It's also a good time to iron out the kinks and get more consoles ready for the upcoming holiday season.
-More games will be made available throughout the summer and fall, hopefully filling in gaps in genres and showing off what the system can do.
-Then in the late fall you media blitz with everything, have a great ton of stock, and a fuller library to unleash on the masses.
All this will hopefully have built up hype for the holidays, and Nintendo could have a very successful first year for NX. I mean this is all hypothetical and idealistic, but smart if it goes well.
Lol to all those who dragged @Quorthon through the mud when he said Zelda U was going to pull a Twilight Princess, and was among the first to suggest NX was coming in the Holiday 2016 - Early 2017 window. He was completely spot on with his prediction.
Not being released until 2017? That's understandable.
No show at E3 after promising it for over a year? WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?
Well, that is shocking to be frank. I always thought they would launch in "early 2017" at the latest, but I was also 99% sure that they would launch in at least one region (why not the US, seeing as the homeconsole business in Japan itself is steep decline) earlier than that, meaning 2016.
So, basically, aside from occasional blimps on the media radar and aside from Zelda, this means another year almost, where Nintendo is irrelevant to the conversation? That is more than just disappointing =/
That Zelda better give people heartattack with it's awesomeness, or they will have to start building momentum in 2017, starting at more or less 0.
Funny thing the PS4.5 and PSVR came up. I mean, all the achieve is missing the christmas season. They still have to compete even in March, and it would be weird IF the PS4.5 turned out to be more powerful than the NX ... Sure power is not everything, but from a marketing standpoint, it's something that apparently cannot be ignored anymore.
@MoonKnight7 Really? The whole Nintendo-pulling-another-TP-thing has been a very, very strong rumor for months now. I've been saying the same thing, so have been most pundits and from what I hear, most youtubers and stuff.
If I had to point to a go-to-videogames-prediction this year, it would have been exactly this
What are they thinking? This E3 was theirs to win now they won't even be part of the conversation.
@MoonKnight7
So true. I remember Quorthon and although we had our disagreements I totally supported him on this one.. although I expected holidays 2016 more than March 2017.
This should shut up those who keep going on about launching in Christmas 2017 and the NX is only an handheld.
I don't believe they want to keep quiet about NX at E3. Nintendo has no idea how to create hype. No wonder the Wii u sold so poorly. They just don't advertise. Maybe that works in Japan but the west is built on hype.
At least we have a solid release window (pending no delays).
This also makes it easier for me to justify replacing my 3DS if it gets worse.
True. I just think that it is a missed opportunity for Nintendo to reach out to the PlayStation and Xbox audience to try and convince them to buy their new system. (They have been talking about expanding their IP and stock and stuff, so if they miss these potential consumers then they have to appeal to more than the pitiful Wii U audience.) D:
@Ralek85
Months? He called it even before the first delay. I can't say he was the first to say it, that's something that cannot be proven, but he was among the first at least. I saw endless amounts people try to rip him a new *sshole, claiming that "Nintendo always puts out a new standalone Zelda on each home console, they'd never do that," and here we are today.
So E3 is going to be entirely focused on a game that's not coming out until after this Christmas?
@Hotfusion
Yeah. I like Quorthon, even with our disagreements in the past. I've had good, civil discussions with him, and he's actually a pretty cool guy. Where he gets a bad rap is when he comes across a "fanboy" who won't listen to reason.
@Syrek24
Nintendo is in the same market as Sony/Microsoft even if the refuse to acknowledge that. I don't think Nintendo has to copy everything it's competitors do, but their competitors do some things really well (online, 3rd parties, etc). So in my opinion it would do them well to steal the things that their competitors do well instead of trying to recreate the wheel as wheels exist.
I'm relieved to hear that it will launch globally in March and no region has to wait more than others.
I guess they'll show off the NX in a direct then? Pretty bummed its not showing at E3...
@BinaryFragger
Haha, yup so true. As I wrote earlier today, the Wii U has had it's grave dug for awhile now, ever since the disaster we called E3 2015. How Nintendo is going to make this thing limp along for another 11 months, with only Paper Mario on the horizon, is just complete torture for it. Just put it out of its misery already.
I had my suspicions when I heard that there were devs that didn't have NX kits yet at the time... There's no way the launch of the NX was going to be spectacular without some sort of round out of games beyond Zelda. It's like... stupidly imperative that Nintendo gets the launch of the NX right, and as disappointing as it is that we won't even get a glimpse of the system (or even info), I will look ahead to the bigger pic. I'm thinking we're going to get a blast of NX info late this year.
Wii U is dead and 3DS is declining faster than any Nintendo handheld before it. Nintendo needs to show people the light at the end of the tunnel, right now it's too damn dark.
Oh this confirms it. RIP Nintendo. You had a good run.
I honestly haven't been following news on the NX very much since most articles have consisted of rumors. This is straight from the horse's mouth, so I may pay more attention from now on.
Especially since Zelda U will now make an appearance on the system.
I mostly play on my 3DS so this doesn't really affect me.
No NX in 2016 = Fine
No NX in E3 = Terrible
@MoonKnight7 I don't know, and don't really care, who said it "first". I was just saying, that has been the next best thing to a 'fool-prove' rumor, as there ever was, for a long time now. Most people accepted it as a quasi fact over the course of the last few months, as the impending release of the NX became a inescapeable fact (a few months sooner or later don't change anything in that regrad), and Zelda was still absent from the public's eye.
Anyways, no big deal ^^ It's kind strange for people to go after him for claiming Nintendo would do the same with the WiiU as they did with the Gamecube - afterall, this is anything but unprecedented.
So weird from nintendo. As others have pointed out, Nintendo much be showing more wiiu content. Makes me wonder if they have a raft of titles planned to come out on both wiiu and NX. If they repeat the disaster of the wiiu launch and kill the system momentum from the get go that would be silly. But it is crazy they're not showing NX at E3. I hope they have secretly lied.
I won 2017...but lost big on the Zelda simultaneous release lol.
@Ralek85
Haha, I'm just telling you what happened. Do with it what you will. I just remember watching it with popcorn in hand. They were ready to burn him at the stake at that time. People were so blinded by fanboy rage, that they didn't stop to actually think about history repeating itself. That's the point I'm trying to get across.
As time went on though, yes, it became incredibly obvious. After being 50/50 on the matter before; I was fully on the NX/Wii U duel release train after such a disastrous E3 last year, when Nintendo proved that they just didn't care about Wii U anymore. So, yeah, sooner or later, almost everybody pieced it together, in their own way.
E3 is looking poor for Nintendo.
@Marce2240 I think you may have called it: "At this current stage, I’m not able to say. However, it’s not merely the successor to the handheld 3DS or stationary console Wii U. This will be hardware that’s been made with a new way of thinking. I’d like to announce more particulars regarding its specs and how it works another time this year.” Kimishima's words. Sounds like a hybrid officially to me.
There's got to be something for Wii U and 3DS towards the end of the year to fill the gap for NX. Sure we know a Paper Mario is coming for Wii U but it also could do with something to fill the void like say a Mario Party 11 or even another "HD Remaster", I'm sure none of us want a repeat of the Wii's last year or so as main console.
At the very least, maybe Nintendo could reveal a date for when all the NX details will be revealed at E3?
E3 would be a bit of a disaster for Nintendo if they announce information about Nx when they need to promote all the new upcoming titles for Wii-U and 3DS, so for another 11 months or so they will keep both their consoles alive with probably new games and 'HD remasters' I am hoping that Nx is called System 7 and that they will do a lot to promote, market and advertise the new console, I'd be surprised if they didn't choose to do a lot of directs to give us all the information we need. Sadly when the nxt is launched I've promised myself that I won’t buy one until at least a year after it comes out, I just feel a bit stung by Nintendo when they launched the 3DS and Wii-U and I don't want to make the same mistake again, I also would like to save up for it and some extra money to buy a game for it when it becomes available. Besides I have a massive 3DS, Wii and Wii-U game back log! I better start playing them all....
@FX102A Oh my god, I hope you're right. That would be a miracle.
@RoomB31 To your points:
You're right, spring is not optimal and it's not impossible to sell units. But it's also not enough to rely on hardcore fans and "tech geeks" to be the only early adopters in March. For one, the number of hardcore Nintendo fans (and ESPECIALLY the number of fans who would adopt early after the flaming garbage heap of a launch the Wii U had) are dwindling in number by the day. Not to mention, I doubt tech geeks and Nintendo fans overlap too much. We are, after all, talking about a company who has been behind on the latest tech for a decade.
The fact that you mentioned Nintendo could just use the early launch to "iron out the kinks" is all the more reason early adopters will have little reason to pick up the next Nintendo console at launch.
And finally, I can't possibly count on Nintendo to have a "media blitz" in the late fall, because they completely failed to use media to properly advertise the Wii U, and their lack of presence at this year's E3 shows that they still don't really know how to give the NX a proper, widespread introduction.
It is all speculation, though. We'll see what happens, but these first moves don't instill much confidence in me.
Frankly, all I really need is Monster Hunter to get me through until Zelda/NX, and that's coming. The extra months to focus on Monster Hunter/my backlog /save a few bucks will be fine. Maybe not so great for NIntendo's bottom line, but it sounds like they've got a pretty realistic understanding of what's going to happen, which suggests to me that they have a coherent plan. They're still sitting on a giant pile of Wii cash, so they'll weather the storm fine.
As others have said, 2016 was never realistic. If they crunched to get it out in 2016, it would be yet another botched release with no accompanying software.
No E3 showing is a pretty big surprise, and suggests to me that what they will be selling is a concept, not just a new box with fancier internals. They want to make sure they can sell their concept in the right way on their own terms, which I think is a great idea. E3 used to be fun, but it does feel kind of outdated now, when the companies could just speak to us directly.
No matter how you slice it, no NX at E3is not good news.
No NX this holiday season is even worse news.
@Nomad I've been saying they should do that for almost a year now. It would make so much sense (and for a guy who has all 55 Smash Bros Amiibo) It would be so amazing to be able to use them all in a Skylanders type game.
I can't remember if I cried,
When I read about Nintendo's brand new bride,
But something touched me deep inside,
The day the Wii U died.
*Actually I didn't buy one but Don can't be turned down.
@FlaygletheBagel
Fair, but you assume that Nintendo won't do anything to correct course from the Wii U wreck, I have some confidence that they will.
A lot is changing internally and I don't doubt that it will have an effect on the future of Nintendo, it is to be seen whether it will be positive, but there is a lot of movement.
when I say tech geek, I really mean people who like shiny new things in tech, and not the "most powerful state of the art" tech.
I figured the NX would launch around that time, but leaving all the information about the NX until after June, then releasing the console that soon after seems very foolish.
Most times they announce a console in some form, get comments from developers and fans to improve things people didn't like, re-introduce it next year, then release it a few months down the road.
I'm starting to think the system is going to be a simple high powered system, with just a traditional controller, and a portable alongside, no real gimmick this time around. It's the only real reason why them introducing it, then releasing it not long after would make any sense.
I really hope this announcement increases the likelihood that we get some good HD remasters of Gamecube-era games. Mario sunshine would be glorious with an HD coat of paint. Maybe they could convince Capcom to bring Monster Hunter Generations to Wii U like they did with MH3U.
Okay, one of those things seems more likely than the other, but a fella can dream, can't he?
Under Nintendo has some hidden games ready to ship by E3, then it is going to be worst than last year's.
No NX news? I love Zelda, but if the biggest reveal is it subtitle then it is going to be a trainwreck.
I've been a Nintendo gamer for years, but I'm tempted to get an old PS3 for games I've missed out on....
@Master-Splinter "What franchise hasnt been a blatant expansion on previous games tropes?" ummm... Splatoon?
Since the SNES days, I cannot imagine anybody whose sole means of gaming is a Nintendo console. These end of generation droughts have been consistently long and awful.
I'm hoping they do a fantastic job of relaying information and generating hype for a great Dreamcast-esque launch before Sony gobbles up all these abandoned gamers this holiday (Playstation VR, the rumored 4K/NEO and the likely price drop for vanilla plus a solid library of cheap titles and high profile releases ), but historically they have not been very good at informing the public.
Great that they're waiting till 2017 for the NX's release; absolutely wretched that they're foregoing a fantastic oppurtunity to build hype for it at this year's E3. Maybe it's just not impressive enough to be shown off, yet, sadly...
@Syrek24 I agree. I have friends who love Nintendo but consider graphics to make or break a game and refuse to even see what "Fire Emblem" or "Bravely Default" is so they just call them "stupid" when they are really excellent games. Honestly, I really don't care about any of Nintendo's decisions except for delaying Zelda U. (I wants it, my precious!) I just think that their decisions will hurt them as a company.
What I find funny though i how this is the very FIRST time Nx is being talked about directly to the public.
I'm alright with this. I love my Wii U and I still have a large backlog of games to play, Wii games included. Not sure about the E3 decision to not to reveal the NX though. I'm hoping there will be more Wii U/3DS games for the remainder of the year. Really looking forward to some more info on Paper Mario ^_^ And I can wait until 2017 for the new Zelda game, still playing WW and TPHD.
Looks like someone owes me an NX game. I bet someone a game during a Nintendo Direct live stream that NX wouldn't release until 2017 (he bet it would be 2016). I'll have to do some digging in the archives to see if I can find his name and see if he's man enough to pay his debts.
I trust Nintendo knows what they are doing. People shouldn't worry so much and just enjoy playing Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, Mario Maker and Smash online while they can!
Nintendo... All I have to say is the NX better literally take my breath away when you finally unveil it, because all of this teasing and delays and rumors of what it is and what it isn't is wearing thin on me. If I finally see the thing and it's some gimmicky remote play vita/PS4 'been there done that' oh-look-at-how-unique-we-are disappointment, I will just stop following NintendoLife and take my business to PushSquare...
@Spiders tbh until just now i thought splatoon was one of those 2nd party deal sorta arrangments. I didnt realise nintendo devd it. however Im unsure if you can truly call something a franchise after one release (even if we largeley suspect it will become one)? honestly idk
@Xenocity True. Well, there's still the Tokyo Games Show to hope for in September...
It's really disappointing that Nintendo doesn't have a good marketing plan in place because using E3 as a platform to talk about the NX would get excitement going for the console. Which in return would create momentum for NX and that means more sales. As releasing it during the holidays would be the best time to do so.
@Master-Splinter It's a first party from a new team - long time devs first time in charge of a project from inception. And it's definitely a franchise: amiibos, merchandise, concerts, tournaments, manga etc.
