Given previous codenames have been things like Dolphin and Cafe, it probably doesn't have anything to do with the actual console.

@Lizuka Nah, their codenames fit their design brief for their gaming philosophy that generation.
Project reality was about creating open worlds in a 3D space.
Cafe was creating a social experience with Miiverse
NX was basically Nintendo home X handheld
Dolphin had flippers for shoulder buttons.
Gamecom was basically a gaming computer - that was the starting philosophy (before that it was cards lol)
I have no idea for Ounces,. My money is like wizard of Oz and DLSS / AI is the wizard behind the curtain making it punch above it's weight.

The idea of there being two models holds weight (uh, no pun intended) from previous information. So the plot does thicken 🤔

Just get it announced Nintendo.

Ounce was might be the unfinished word of Announce.
Also, Ounce have two different measurements.
The Troy system and Avoirdupois system.
Troy might be for Handheld style and Avoirdupois might be the console style.

@UltimateOtaku91 People these days just regurgitate what they've heard someone else say rather than do research for themselves. The codename for the Switch successor was leaked earlier this year as "Oz."

Now, when people see that they initially refer to the measurement associated with those two letters together which is "Ounce."

Traditionally without fail, Nintendo always does one of two things for the code name of their next-gen console.

1. It refers to the names of the chips used in the device.

or...

2. The form-factor, functionality, or purpose of the device.

Now, in some way "Ounce" could do one of those things. I just don't logically see how. I do however see this.

The code name isn't "Ounce." The code name is "OZ" as in 'The Wizard of Oz.'

What was 'The Wizard of Oz' most known for? Using his genius intellect and technology to make himself look bigger and more impressive than he actually was.

What have we heard so far about the Switch 2? That the raw horsepower is modest compared to the current-gen, but with DLSS upscaling and Ray-Tracing the games may give the APPEARANCE of being close to, if not on-par with the current-gen consoles.

To me that makes the most sense. It could also be why they are waiting so long. If the Switch 2 can actually do that, then they know that there is no hurry because nothing released in the near future will be able to produce visuals and performance substantially better than even what the PS5 Pro can do.

This just verify what we know already. The ounce of truth will be reveal soon, perhaps the next weak.

Ounce? I'd associate that codename to the recently released Alarmo more than the Swiitch.

@d2k Honestly I have a hard time believing that the codename is "ounce" as well. It's just a weird name. Especially considering most Japanese people probably don't even know what an ounce is (they use grams).
In contrast OZ as in "The Wizard of Oz" is very much known over there and fits nicely with the codename of the switch.
I have yet to see proof of it explicitly being written as "ounce" in their database. Otherwise I will have to assume that some news source mistakingly read those two letters as "ounce" and everyone is copying this instead of doing their own research.

Don't think it matter when they release it or what it called.as long as it still a hybrid console. Personally their lots of great game to play on switch . Alot of people want this new console meaning they're going be 400quid out of pocket then the games be 60quid first year a good game or games will be scarce. Maybe iam just a tight arse but spending anymore than 250 on a console bloody hurts been playing smash brawl today admit late to the game bought it 2023 but what a game iam usually crap at fighter hant got the time learn all the moves. But this pretty quick to learn and what a game. Played bit of mario Rabbids spark of hope too.

Man, this isn't rocket science. The Switch's prototype name was NX. Add a letter more, and there comes OZ, i.e., ounce. (I skipped the Y, as it's a too frequent word-ending letter). You may go in peace now.

Those are probably Devs code name for what stage of the Development the Switch to completion or to final testing of components.

It stands for we should finally stop milking our fanbase while sit on our mountain of 1oz gold coins and bars. Seriously though, I am not even hyped and barley care. They have milked this cow way to long. TOTK did me in, I don't Fanboy any corpo, Csuite or otherwise. The game is fine, the performance and Resolution (not graphics) are not. The Tegra when it launched in the Shield TV which I bought (both pro versions) at launch and still use was awesome... In 2015. We are finally getting a update to Android 12 at least.

Now if it is waiting on some awesome DLSS tech or something, so be it. There is stuff out there saying it's been ready for some time though. I give them a small pass for the chip shortage but that didn't effect Nintendo let alone Nvidia to much. It's hard to say but they should have stuck to this year not 2025.

@Olmectron But...but DLSS IS AI. I think they meant they aren't going to be using it in a creative sense...maybe. But as a tool to improve hardware (which they have said for the past couple of decades they can't compete in) I'm sure they are all in!

It's not "ounce", it's OZ. An "ounce" is an archaic unit of measurement no longer used in the civilized part of the world and a Japanese company would certainly not take it into account when designating codenames.

Whether it’s ounce or OZ, I’m leaning towards OZ b/c all the reasons listed above, I’m really not sure why this leak matters. It’s a code name, not the real name, what difference does it make?

I do feel bad for Gamefreak about the massive data breach but letting a code name out that we already knew about earlier in the year seems inconsequential.🤷🏻‍♂️

@Edu23XWiiU It's just stuff I gleaned from reading stuff at the time. The word cafe certainly fitted with Mr Iwata's vision of gaming. As for the flippers...yeah, best I got lol (although, analogue shoulder buttons that clicked was a new input device...) They do seem to name their handhelds more like cars But I do think the point of a name (even if not explicitly stated) is to evoke a thought be it for the team while it is in development or ,like a car, to create an illusion you are buying something better than an automobile.) So something like 'revolution' will spur on devs thinking they are creating something different or a name like proace will make you think you've bought something expensive etc etc.

It's kinda obvious that the next mainline pokemon game will be on the Switch 2.

Project "Dolphin" was the best codename IMO and it turned out to be one of my favourite Nintendo consoles of all time. SNES, GameCube and Switch in no particular order.

Top 5 consoles of all time adds in Amiga (not console but a worthy choice IMO) and the Megadrive.

Precisely this. The company that owns Nintendo is Megachips, and a few years ago they bought a licence to use the AI technology called AKIDA, from an Australian tech company called Brainchip. The developer of this Spiking Neural Network technology is a person called Peter VanDerMade, and I guess he is the Wizard of Oz, who has brought this concept to reality.

I have the following theory:

From Antiquity until the 1830s, the colour purple in fabrics was so rare that just one ounce of Tyrian Purple was worth three bars of gold. This suggests that the next generation Nintendo console will have a purple theme and be positioned as a premium, iterative version of the Switch (a glorified Switch Pro Plus if you will) costing $450+ at launch, which would be in line with those Switch 2 molds and CADs that were leaked a couple of weeks ago being accurate. It would also suggest that Nintendo are looking to extend the life of the existing Switch line towards 2030 by positioning it as Nintendo's budget format (much as they attempted to do with the 3DS after the Switch's release).

@GrailUK yeah, I know, I once read the entire GameCube history, it was a very long, but fun read hehehe. Some people are saying that the codename is actually "OZ". I prefer to call it that or Ounce, it's better than "Switch 2". That name was moronic to start with hehehe.
