Oh man, a music editor would be so good. Almost like Mario Paint kinda stuff that you can craft and then use in the backgrounds of your level.

I'm hoping there IS a Maker 3 in the first place lol And if they do make it, I just want to have REAL super worlds where the creator can select the option that losing all your lives equals an actual game over, not just a slap on the wrist that replenishes your lives and keeps you on the same level.

Just the option for that, mind you.

With the Mario Maker 1 server being shut me down it makes me think... will Nintendo do the same thing to Super Mario Maker 2? Obviously those precise servers will shut down someday, but it would be really neet if Nintendo basically ported all the smm2 levels into smm3 as a legacy mode or something. I am somewhat doubtful Nintendo will do this, but it would be neat if they did! That's 37 million levels which could be preserved... even though 36 million of them probably suck 😝

Here are my ideas for a Mario Maker 3 (not sure if people already said this)

1. Super Mario Bros. 2 Gameplay style (I just want Shy Guys, okay?)
2. Ice Flower (This is an obvious power-up how is it not in Mario Maker yet?)
3. Mini Mushroom (This could have so much potential with unique mechanics!)
4. Bring back Amiibo/unlockable costumes (They were great in Mario Maker 1. Maybe instead they could just be exclusively unlockable ones by doing missions/online or something)
5. More music options (In SMM2, you can choose a variety of songs like Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy music. Maybe add more classic music from other Mario games?)
6. Better building co-op (must use single joy-con in SMM2, maybe make it compatible with a pro-controller at least)
7. Beach and Outside Lava maps (This new scenery would add a lot more variety)
8. Penguin Suit (Penguin is so fun, I miss it a lot)

@PikminMarioKirby

better co-op building is a great idea but I also want that to be possible online. Being able to make a level with an online friend would be useful, even if it was just sharing contraptions and such. Being able to co-op make super worlds would also be super useful.

I do wonder what they will do with the zelda/smb2 power-ups versus actual themes in the next game.

Here’s some ideas I have in mind:

-Level presets: I find templates and such to be a great thing to add and if that’s been added already in SMM2, ignore this.
-Sharing Levels in packs rather than individually. Again, if it’s in 2 now ignore this.
-Sunshine level creator!!!
-exclusive power ups: remember when skins were really popular? Yeah I always felt it’d be cool to use link’s sword, samus’s gun, peach’s flutter jump, etc.

@FishyS Oh wow online co-op building would be great! That’s definitely something they should add at somepoint. Basically a way to share the level with friends to edit it. It’d be really cool if you made a level, and then sent it to your friends so they can make small edits. There’s so much potential in that!

@Yousef- F.L.U.D.D. would be awesome in Mario Maker, especially if you could choose from all of the nozzles. Shooting up really high would be awesome!

Mario Maker 3 is the perfect installment to focus on 3D level editing.

And once they cross that line and open Pandora's box, I think they can't just stop with 64 tools. You'll have to add Sunshine/Gamecube tools, Galaxy/Wii tools, and 3D World tools. They can start with just a few of them and drip feed the others over time.

IMHO Mario Maker 1 and 2 made me tempted to try them out, but a Mario Maker 3D would be a day one purchase.

@Ulysses practically unending amount of Super Mario 64 levels…would be a dream come true…Nintendo please do this…

@Ulysses I honestly doubt we would get N64, GCN, and Wii versions of a 3D level creator, but I could definitely see a SM3DW/3DL style being incorporated. Those games were basically the closest to a 2D platformer in the 3D realm, and I think it could work pretty well as a player-made system.

@Bunkerneath THIS LOOKS SO GOOD! Nintendo really needs to make something like this. SM64 is one of my favorite games, so thousands of user-created levels and building my own would be SO AWESOME!

Super Mario Maker 2 is now over 5 years old! It’s crazy to believe that it’s been out for so long, this is top 10 Switch games for me.

I believe it was only 4 years between the release of Super Mario Maker (Wii U) to Super Mario Maker 2. That means it’s already been a longer wait for Mario Maker 3.

To be fair, the Mario Maker devs have been making Pikmin 4 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, so they have been busy with other things. Nintendo probably wants SMM3 to be a Switch Successor game, so it is probably in development right now. I hope that Nintendo continues this series, as they seem to sell well and are well received.

Mario Maker is one of my favorite Mario branches, I hope we get a new one soon!

@PikminMarioKirby You're right, it has been over 5 years! I still play smm2 fairly often, but the game has definitely slowed down. The short time period between the first 2 games was likely simply because... Wii U. Back when we thought Switch 2 was coming out in 2024, I was hoping we would get mario maker 3 in 2025 for the 10th anniversary (and 40th Mario anniversary). It is seeming less likely now though with (presumably) 3D mario next year, although maybe an early 2026 game in the same time slot Bowser's fury came to Switch? Or else 2027 similar to the release timeline on Switch but I hope it is earlier. It's hard to know what Nintendo is putting resources into.

We unfortunately never got our Wonder DLC, but I'm hoping that means Mario Maker 3 will have Wonder things. I feel like they could put the badges into every single mode (please no invisibility badge). Wonder effects they could presumably do in a more limited way in a Wonder-only mode.

The games sell fairly well but not as well as their mainline Mario games so I hope Nintendo decides it is worth continuing. I feel like the Mario Maker community is also a really good advertisement for Nintendo — I bet plenty of people bought Switches after watching one of the 8 million YouTube or Twitch Mario Maker stream/videos (I have a friend irl who did)

@FishyS Mario Maker 2 always feels like a game I can go back to. It’s charming, unique, and very creative. Feels like there’s endless possibilities, it’s always fun making new levels and trying out others.

I think Nintendo will definitely try to cash out on Mario’s 40th anniversary next year. Mario 35th anniversary was HUGE, and I can see something similar happening with the 40th anniversary. Maybe at least tease Mario Maker 3 at the presentation?

3D Mario is very likely to be the launch title of the next console, so if the next console comes out 2025, I don’t think Mario Maker will happen until at least 2026.

After the June Direct it doesn’t look like we’ll get Mario Wonder DLC, but I’d love some Mario Wonder mode in SMM3. Possibly even more, I’d want SMB2 game mode (Although I may want that just because Shy Guy).

Yeah the Mario Maker community is pretty big, since the game has a lot of online focus and had updates it was very engaging to keep up with the game. I hope we’ll get a SMM3, I think since Eighting seems to be working on Pikmin more, maybe this team will have a bit more focus on 2D Mario/Mario Maker?

Nintoz

I always feel like Super Mario Maker 2 is underrated even though it got a lot of attention and subsequent updates. Maybe it's because you don't tend to see it many 'Top Switch Games' lists?
I don't know if it counts as a '2D Mario Game' but if so this is right up there with Wonder and World in my opinion, it's a fantastic creative tool along with simply being great value for money with a countless number of levels (regardless of quality) to play through.
I cannot believe it's been 5 years since it released that's crazy!

However I think I remember hearing somewhere that SMM2 underperformed to what Nintendo were projecting... I might be wrong though.
As for a SMM3, I did initially think they could go down the 'Wonder route', but also I think they'll want to squeeze another game or two out of that concept before handing us the reigns?
Then of course there's 'Super Mario Maker 3D' which I always thought to be a little unfeasible but then I remembered Game Builder Garage exists so perhaps they would be willing to go down that route.
Agree with @pikminmariokirby with the idea that a 3D Mario is very likely to be coming next year to coincide with Switch 2 so any chance of this happening is probably still a way off.

It HAS to be Wind Waker!!

FishyS

@Nintoz I think when most people talk about smm2 underperforming they meant at the very beginning in 2019. For some reason Nintendo released it a few months after nsmbu deluxe so not that many people bought 2 2D mario games in a row. But now it's sold 8.5 ish million and has stayed in the top 25 best selling games on Switch — not quite as high as the mainline Mario games, but middle of the pack in terms of all Mario franchise games on Switch. I do think it could have sold even more if Nintendo had hyped it up more.

In terms of 3D Maker, the fact that Game Builder Garage is a how-to-program game says a little about how difficult 3D level design is. Nintendo could make a 3D Mario maker, but I feel like more people would give up on it and 99.99% of levels would be trash rather than the current 99%. If Nintendo does go that route, I hope it is an add-on to a new 2D maker rather than a full replacement. That said, I would love a Game Builder Garage 2 - that game got almost no love, with Nintendo basically only supporting it for a few weeks.

If Super Mario Maker 3 is 3D, I’d be curious as to what game modes it would have. I’d say SM64 and 3D World (with some parts from 3D Land) are most likely, the other games would be harder to put in a building engine.

Honestly, I think just one game mode could be enough. I’d be perfectly happy with a Super Mario 64 Maker. There was some fan-made thing not too long ago that was essentially Mario Maker 64 (I think someone put a video of it on this discussion but the video was copyrighted), and I think that it would be very enjoyable for a lot of people.

Either way, I’ll be happy whether SMM3 is 2D or 3D. I just hope that if it’s 2D that it expands a lot from what the first two games did, and if it’s 3D that it has Mario 64 builder XD

@PikminMarioKirby I have a feeling that of all the possible ways "Mario Maker 3D" could turn out, a 3D Land/World style would be the easiest to implement. After all, it's basically a classic Mario platformer but in 3D. Whereas SM64 or Sunshine or Galaxy were very much non-linear and definitely not grid-based in their design.

@CaleBoi25 That’s fair. 3D Land and 3D World are pretty linear, and we already have a 2D maker for that game, so it’d probably be the easiest option. I think SM64 is the next likely option, especially since it’s the 1st 3D Mario game and would probably be easier than Odyssey or Galaxy.

I think there is a lot of potential for different locations for the next Mario Maker. I think Tower from New Super Mario Bros would be SO COOL! Also from the same games, Volcano and Beach would be really nice. Volcano is similar to castle, but I really like the outdoor environment. Any other locations people would like to see in the next Mario Maker?
