Dampé Automaton Guide Echoes of Wisdom

Dampé is one of a handful of returning characters appearing in Echoes of Wisdom. Instead of tending to the graveyards or building dungeons, he's got a very different function here.

In this guide, we've got a list of all Automatons and how to unlock them, how to complete all of Dampé's Side Quests, and how to access Dampé Studio.

For a list of all Side Quests available in Echoes of Wisdom, make sure to consult our complete list.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Walkthrough - All Dampé Side Quests

To unlock all six Automatons, you'll need to complete a series of Side Quests which require you to find either one or two pieces of inspiration for Dampé. These are usually an item that you can only get through another Side Quest and a Monster Echo.

Below, we'll be listing all of the Side Quests you get from Dampé, along with what you need to create each Automaton.

Automaton Engineer Dampé!

Techtite Echoes of Wisdom

Automaton Unlock: Techtite

"A showy construct that uses built-in rockets to jump high in the air, blasting its surroundings as it takes off."

You can get the Automaton Engineer Dampé Side Quest in Echoes of Wisdom anytime after you complete the Still Missing Main Quest. That means you need to have cleared Hyrule Castle Dungeon and defeated the boss there.

Once you've spoken to Dampé and rescued him from the crow, he'll head back to his house, which is in Eastern Hyrule Field, just east of Hyrule Castle Town. We've covered how to get to Dampé Studio at the bottom of this guide if you're struggling to reach it.

The Techtite Automaton is just like the ordinary Tektite monster, except it jumps up extremely high thanks to its powerful blast jump, which pushes enemies away. It's also good for getting up to high places if you don't have Echoes such as the Platboom or Cloud.

To build your first Automaton, you should already have the Echoes you need. Dampé will ask for two things:

  • "creature with the big eye--the sort that's always jumping around" - Tektite
  • "something that shoots hot smoke out of its backside to blast forward" - Mothula

The Tektite is a pretty common enemy that you can find in two locations: Hyrule Field, just west of Hyrule Castle Town, in a canyon-like area; and Jabul Waters, in the shallow waters close to Seesyde Village.

Mothula can be found in the Gerudo Desert's main dungeon, the Gerudo Sanctum on 2F. You can use the Lv. 2 version of either of these monsters, but you should already have the base versions by this point in the game.

Explosions Galore!

Tocktorok Echoes of Wisdom

Automaton Unlock: Tocktorok

"Fireworks pour continually out of this dangerous automaton's mouth, causing flashy destruction."

The Explosions Galore! Side Quest is Echoes of Wisdom's second Automaton Side Quest. You can unlock it after completing Automaton Engineer Dampé. Examine Dampé's notebook and you'll see some new entries — reading these will unlock the new Side Quests.

Tocktorok is a pretty useful Automaton to have. It fires bullets just like the Octorok, except these explode like fireworks.

This Automaton requires more than just monster Echoes, and unless you've got lucky and visited the Eldin Region before the rifts have taken over the volcano, you won't be able to get this Automaton until after you've completed The Rift on Eldin Volcano Main Quest.

Anyway, Dampé, as always, will ask for two different objects:

  • "a creature that spits stones out of its mouth" - Octorok
  • "firework... There's a guy up on Eldin Volcano who crafts fireworks, so ya might check there." - Firework Echo

Octoroks are very easy to find — they live in bodies of water. You should have one from way back at Suthorn Prairie, even. If not, they're in Hyrule Field and Jabul Waters.

The Firework Echo is the one that's locked behind the Eldin Volcano rift. You need to complete The Fireworks Artist Side Quest to get access to this Echo. You can pick up this Side Quest on the second floor of Goron City, in the back room to the right. Speak to the fireworks artisan to get the quest.

Performance Artist!

Gizmol Echoes of Wisdom

Automaton Unlock: Gizmol

"Filling the world with its sparkling songs, this clockwork cutie breaks hearts and enemies."

This is definitely the cutest Automaton, and Performance Artist! in Echoes of Wisdom is a pretty easy Side Quest to complete. You can get this from Dampé's notebook after completing Automaton Engineer Dampé.

Despite its sparkly appearance, Gizmol will actually scare enemies away and scatter them about the area by singing. it's great for dealing with big groups of enemies, and especially useful in the Slumber Dojo.

As always, Dampé wants two different things to create this Echo — one is very easy to get, while the other requires you to have completed a number of Side Quests and then take part in a mini game:

  • "jiggly monster with cute little eyes" - Zol
  • "a part that makes beautiful tones... I feel like I heard something melodic around Hyrule Ranch at some point..." Prismatic Music Box

The Zol should be very easy at this point in the game. You should have grabbed the Zol Echo on Suthorn Beach back at the beginning of the game. If not, they're all over the place.

The Prismatic Music Box will take a bit more work, however. You need to be able to take part in the Horse Racing at Hyrule Ranch. To access this, you need Zelda's white horse, which means you need to complete the Runaway Horse and Impa's Gift Side Quests.

Once you have Zelda's horse, ride it to the ranch and take part in the Flag Race until you unlock the Middle Course. Beat that in under 25 seconds to get the music box.

Endless Stomach!

High-Teku Baba Echoes of Wisdom

Automaton Unlock: High-Teku Baba

"This automaton has a big, clockwork appetite. It swallows up any monster it can reach in one gulp."

The Endless Stomach! Side Quest in Echoes of Wisdom will unlock the High-Teku Baba, an ingenious name for an Automaton that can be a bit of a double-edged sword. Like the other Side Quests at Dampé Studio, you need to complete Automaton Engineer Dampé before you can access his diary and grab the quest.

High-Teku Baba can eat enemies in one big gulp, just like its real-life counterpart — though it's a lot more powerful — but it also eats any rupees that the monster holds. Not ideal if you need the money for Accessories or mini games!

The two objects you need here aren't too difficult to get, so let's go over what you need and how to get them:

  • "A creature that snaps and swallows things whole with its gaping jaws" - Deku Baba
  • "Special bits that have great clamping ability... The fella who spreads acorns around has a great clamper, I've heard." - Acorn Gathering Mini Game in the west part of Hyrule Field

Like most other monster Echoes, you should already have the Deku Baba. These are first found in the Suthorn Ruins, but you'll also spot variants in Jabul Ruins and Faron Temple. Every single dungeon is home to the Deku Baba, essentially. You can also find them in a few caves across Hyrule.

The Steel Trap is a reward for beating the Acorn Guy's mini game in the far west of Hyrule Field. You'll find him up a steep plateau which is surrounded by rocks, a broken wall, and large platforms. Collect all of the acorns in under 60 seconds and you'll get the Steel Trap.

Chop 'Em In Two!

Roboblin Echoes of Wisdom

Automaton Unlock: Roboblin

"A deadly mechanical sword fighter whose flashing blade can take out whole groups of enemies."

Chop 'em in Two! Is one of the last Automaton Side Quests in Echoes of Wisdom, and completing it will get you one of the best Automatons in the game, the Roboblin. Clear the Automaton Engineer Dampé Side Quest to get access to this one, which you'll find in the engineer's notebook.

The Robobin isn't a special Automaton because it's essentially just a very powerful Sword Moblin. It's probably about as powerful as the Sword Moblin Lv. 3, without the power cost of using Echoes.

As such, you'll probably want to grab this one to help you with a couple of Side Quests, especially ones involving mini-dungeons like Cotton-Candy Hunt. This is what Dampé will ask for, and what you need to get:

  • "monster with a sword who fights alongside others" - Sword Moblin
  • "a special weapon. I heard the leader of the dojo in Kakariko Village has a rare sword." - Heirloom Katana

Sword Moblin is another Echo you should already have by the time you get this Side Quest. Lv. 1, Lv. 2, and Lv. 3 work here. You can get these as early as Suthorn Forest, but they're also in the Gerudo Desert, Jabul Waters, Hyrule Field, Eastern Hyrule Field, Faron Wetlands, and Hebra Mountain.

The Heirloom Katana is a reward for participating in the Slumber Dojo in Kakariko Village. You need to clear six challenges for Shisho to give you his prized sword. If you're having trouble finding the dojo or clearing the challenges, we've got a handy tips & tricks guide on the Slumber Dojo, including all the Milestone Rewards, you can check out.

Get Rich Quick!

Goldfinch Echoes of Wisdom
Image: Nintendo Life

Automaton Unlock: Goldfinch

"Clockwork bird that knocks rupees out of the enemies it strikes. It can glide indefinitely until it winds down."

Once you've built at least four Automatons, you'll finally have access to the Get Rich Quick! Side Quest in Echoes of Wisdom. This will allow you to make the Goldfinch, which is Dampé's simple yet most effective Automaton.

The Goldfinch acts like any other bird enemy — notice when crows attack you that you drop rupees? Well why not unleash that same pain on others, too! The Goldfinch will cause enemies to drop rupees. Very useful when paired with the Silver Brooch or Gold Brooch accessories.

Despite this being the final Automaton, getting the tools Dampé needs isn't too hard. In fact, Dampé is exacting revenge on an old foe. Here's what he needs:

  • "Bring me that crow, will ya?" - Crow
  • "I'll need a real special flashy somethin'. Speakin' of, I think I met a Gerudo who's got a real shiny thing... If memory serves, she was researching something at the oasis in Gerudo Desert." - Golden Fan

Remember the Crow that Dampé was attacked by? Well, you should have the Crow as an Echo, so that's what you need to give him. It was north of Hyrule Ranch in Hyrule Field. Otherwise, you'll find lots of Crows at the entrance of the Gerudo Desert.

The Golden Fan is the harder item to obtain here. Warp to Oasis and take part in the Mango Rush mini game. You need to unlock the Radiant Seed difficulty, the second stage of the mini game. That means beating the Standard Seed difficulty by getting 40 mangoes. To get the fan, you need to collect 50 mangoes on Radiant.

Where is Dampé?

The first time you encounter Dampé will be in the second half of the game — that's after you've saved Hyrule Castle Town from the giant rift and found the King of Hyrule.

Dampé will be found just north of Hyrule Ranch, arguing with a crow. After getting close, you'll activate the Automaton Engineer Dampé Side Quest.

Defeat the crow and Dampé will thank you and tell you to swing by his house later. He'll mark it on the map for you.

Where is Dampé Studio?

Dampé's house is found in Eastern Hyrule Field, right below Hebra Mountain.

To get there, head east from Hyrule Castle Town and follow the path to the northeast past the field of boulders. Keep heading north from here, then when you reach the Moblin camp, go east. Follow the grassy area down and around and eventually, you'll reach Dampé's house — known as Dampé Studio.

What are Automatons?

Tektite Echoes of Wisdom

Automatons are basically mechanical monsters in Echoes of Wisdom that function a bit like Echoes. They're essentially a free body that you can send out.

They can fight other enemies, or you can use them to get around, just like all your other Echoes. Think of them as a free Echo. To call them out, press 'Left' on the d-pad and cycle through them in a menu similar to your Echoes.

How many Automaton are there?

In total, there are six different Automaton to unlock.

You'll need to bring Dampé the different components before you can use them, but once he's built one, you'll never need to rebuild it again.

How do I fix a broken Automaton?

Dampé Fix Automaton Echoes of Wisdom
Image: Nintendo Life

If your Automaton breaks out in the field, then you'll need to bring it back to Dampé to fix.

To fix an Automaton, Dampé will need you to pay with either Rupees or Monster Stones. You'll find rupees just about anywhere in Echoes of Wisdom, so make sure you're cutting down grass and breaking pots.

As for Monster Stones, these are a bit less common, but you often get these as enemy drops or quest rewards. Check out our complete Monster Stone guide for more details on where to get them.

If you want to know how much it costs to repair your broken robots, then check out our table below.

Automaton Cost to repair (Rupees) Cost to repair (Monster Stones)
Techtite 25 1
Tocktorok 25 1
Gizmol 35 1
High-Teku Baba 35 1
Roboblin 35 1
Goldfinch 50 1
