Switch 2's Rumoured 'C' Button Isn't Actually A 'C' Button

I think someone said something about group chat and voice chat. What if it could be for that?

Since it's blank maybe it's a delete save data button. A simple press on the button deletes the save data of the game you're currently playing.

I’m guessing it’s just been blanked out for the trailer. The odds that the button is actually blank on the device itself are near zero.

@IceClimbersMain Exactly. Nintendo would not put a blank button with no way to actually read what it is for. It is 100% left blank for the April 2nd reveal.

@MrCarlos46 I REALLY hope not to be honest. It's just more parental control setup that I have to do for the kids.

It's Nintendo's "Achievement" button, instead of actual achievements, when YOU think you've done something worthy in-game, press the button and the console gives you a round of applause. Calling it.

My bet is that C will stand for "Cursor" mode.

If using a cursor is a core part of the UI and games, as the mouse-like optical sensor seems to suggest, maybe it's a dedicated "calibrate" or "cursor" button to recenter it on the screen. Perhaps it could work both as a mouse using the sensor and as a gyro cursor. A dedicated button might make a gyro cursor more manageable without needing to allocate one of the other buttons as a recenter button on a game-by-game basis.

I wonder how many articles and rumours this unknown button will drag up!! God help us..

I'm guessing they left the render blank to surprise us at the official showcase.

At the very least, the hands-on at New York should confirm whether the C is actually there in person!

But if the C really is not there, then it could indicate that the new button is even more versatile than its earlier iterations.

It's a little big for that, but the "button" for disconnecting the Joy-Cons from the display was also blank...maybe just prepare yourself to be underwhelmed xD

Is it possible that it's just a second screenshot button, so that everyone has one when playing games that use 1 joycon per person?

This is totally baseless but I had the thought that maybe the button was given different letters as Nintendo sent out details to different 3rd parties as a sort of identifier. If the button ends up being blank when the console releases I feel like that's a possibility. If that is the case, I imagine whatever company got "C" is in big trouble with Nintendo lol.

It’s probably just another screenshot button. This was limited to only the left JoyCon, so only one person could use it if the controllers were shared.
Not sure where all these wild theories are coming from, it literally looks the same shape and size…

@sanderev Yeah, that's a fair point. It would definitely complicate things when they're split up. If the hypothesis is accurate at all, I would guess it would mostly be for gyro recentering, since computer mice don't need a recenter button; you just pick them up and plop them where you need them. Maybe interfaces or games that accomodate a gyro cursor would just require a full pair of Joy-Cons. But I'm just spitballing here. Knowing Nintendo, the button could be for any random thing.

It's not actually going to be a button, but a small window that shows treasured childhood memories when the system detects you are feeling upset or stressed.

I'm just thinking it's kinda funny that more of the Switch "2" reveal will come the day after April Fool's Day.

@MrCarlos46 Nintendo could probably use AI to filter prohibited words too. So I think it's a possibility for this gen.

Camera button

The fact this new blank button isn't on both controllers is of more interest to me, because now there's one extra button on only the right controller. But, having said that, while the current Joy-Con have the same amount of buttons on each controller, it's not like those random UI ones function the same on each.

I have a bit of a different take. I think it's a "Share" button. Like the other consoles now also have. So you can share your screenshots and video's with the web directly from the game.

Maybe a finger print reader? Could be used to authorise purchases and unlock your device. Would be more secure in case your Switch gets stolen.

Edit: I noticed the screenshot button still in place on the other controller. Maybe it's just like the light ring around the home button on the original switch... something to have just in case they want it.

@Ooyah They could, although you wouldn't be able to use it to authorise purchases when docked in that scenario, so that could explain why it would be on one of the Joy-Cons (if it even is a fingerprint reader! 😅)

@Lord Not a fan myself. I loved the red/ blue of the Switch. I'm guessing there will be another colour choice for launch. Let's hope it's not the colour of the UI. Basic Salmon.

Remember the 3DS had a camera button, could be the same here. Also could be used for screenshots, etc

I’d guess it was left blank intentionally as this video was not released to provide info on features, just hardware. I’m sure they want to keep whatever functionality that button provides under wraps until April.

@Pachrisu this is what it looks like to me too. But then why is it slightly different? Nevertheless this is my go to theory until proven otherwise.

Anyone believing "renders" should have done that at their own risk, but I also assumed the thing to be a button in the trailer; on closer inspection, it looks like something between a sensor (NFC? But that one already spent a generation neatly tucked under the right stick) and a micro version of Deck touchpad.😄 Still shapely and protruding enough to be pressable, though, and, like I said earlier, arguably the main intrigue of the trailer. And contrary to some comments above, the screenshot button looks to be in its usual place, too.

Amiibo sensor perhaps?

I think it may be a button to bring up some sort of menu. Maybe a chat menu if this thing has built-in voice chat? Or maybe something else entirely, like a quick settings menu or something.

@Mythra Because of size, I imagine. Full size stick modules are quite big and would've made the Joy-Con thicker, while the sticks themselves would also protrude farther.

All we've seen is short trailer and I'm so hyped already!!

I hope it's a button that allows us to remap buttons. That would be nice, then we don't have to always go back to the system setting to change that every time we want to play the game our ways.

It’s definitely either a GameGenie button or a Power Glove adapter. We’ll find out for sure on 2025/14/13.

Could be a calibration button for the rumored "mouse-like" feature of the controller.

They clearly made it look blank on the reveal trailer so that they can "reveal" what it actually is in April...at which point, it will likely be a C button lol

I'd bet it's a front facing camera for some kind of VR/AR functionality. 'C' for Camera.

It could be a trackpad

I'd like it to be a 3D on-off button.
Something like the 3D slider of the 3DS.

My theory is that it isn't a button, it's a tiny trackpad/touchpad. If the joycons have new mouse functionality, there needs to be a handheld equivalent, right?

Most of these hypotheses fail to account for its blankness. It looks similar to a Steam Deck touch pad, although I don't see how workable it could be at that size. Anything mouse-like though would (1) be the exact balance between disciplined and creative that I want from a Nintendo hardware innovation, (2) continue the growing trend of platform consolidation, (3) help ensure great 3rd party support, (4) help Nintendo be appealing for console exclusives just like it's touch screen has been, (5) promote Joy Con usage over pro controllers, and (6) help make golden ages for even more genres.

So far we're still missing Sakurai's scroll wheel feature, alas.

@naxuu Great point about having a handheld equivalent. Although I suppose the touchscreen could be considered maybe 80% as effective.

@Thomystic - They didn’t explain any features. They didn’t explain the new Joy-Con mechanisms or why there is a 2nd USB port on the top. Clearly they want to talk about functionality later.

@BaldB3lper78 Amiibo don't need buttons. On the original Switch, you typically activated the right Joy-Con's amiibo sensor by pressing a button on the left Joy-Con (in the right context).

This isn't in a good physical position for gameplay. It's below the Home button, so that means it invokes a core console feature. My guess is it's a microphone mute/unmute button, but that would be pretty boring and not really worth all the obfuscation that Nintendo is clearly putting in effort to do. Or they just haven't finalized the design yet.

@burndive Nintendo isn’t and hasn’t confused anyone. The leakers have done that. TBH I don’t care too much what it is for. It will be a great sequel console and I can’t wait. Sadly there will be people who will moan and say it’s not good enough but they need to get a life!

It’s Switch 2. More of the same but better. Which is exactly what they needed to do and will be what we get!

I wonder if it might be where the amiibo scan in. If that changed the joysticks out for better ones, it might be they couldn't figure out how to have them still work with amiibo.

My best guess is that it's a screen cap button so that player two gets one as well.

I zoomed in the picture really hard, and the funny thing is, it looks just like the photo button on the left joycon. I can't see them giving us two photo buttons since they didn't give us two home buttons. My leading theory is what someone already said, and that is switching to Mouse mode.

I read a theory that its a "cast" button that wirelessly sends the Switch's display to the dock. I completely believe that theory! The Wii U had that technology and it worked perfectly, and it would really distinguish the Switch 2 as an innovative follow-up to the original.

My second theory is that its a button to hot swap between games. The Switch 2 has been rumored to have 12 GB of RAM. That's way more than the PS4 had, which the Switch 2 is supposedly at graphical parity with. I could see them selling the ability to "switch" between two games at the press of a button.

Maybe it's not a button at all but a super small touchpad/trackpad.
