We don't have a release date yet, but hey, there will be a proper Nintendo Direct on February the 4th. Then we'll know the rest of the info!

I'll be honest, this does nothing for me. It's bigger and the Joy-Cons are magnetic - OK, great, but what does it offer that the Switch doesn't? I know this is just a teaser and we'll get a proper look at it in April, but right now I don't know why I would want this thing.

I do hope we still get the annual spring Direct in February, even if it's a smaller presentation.

The fact that it's officially called "Switch 2" shows they're not risking any Wii U or New 3DS confusion this time around.

Also the fact that the Direct is so early in April makes it so transparent that they're gonna squeeze every last penny out of the fiscal year/quarter. But hopefully this also means an official release date isnt too far behind?...

Okay, so the leaks were accurate. Still, this reveal feels very underwhelming, like it's only there to fulfill the obligation of having made the announcement during the current financial year.

I guess they're waiting for world economy events to settle before revealing more important details like the price.

@EarthboundBenjy I was speculating with a relative, but the more obvious games might be accessory-focused ones like Ring Fit and Labo, as the console/controllers likely wont fit without workarounds.

It's also hard to tell from the video, but if they removed the IR sensor as well, that might shave off a few games too.

@EarthboundBenjy Off the top of my head, Switch 2 won't work with the VR Labo set unless they make a new cardboard build for it. That in itself is enough to warrant them making such a statement now, it'll protect them from any "But it's backwards compatible!" complaints even just for that one game.

The Switch 2 reveal itself was very underwhelming though at least they announced a Switch 2 Direct for April 2nd. I believe when that happens my opinion of the system will be a lot more positive.

Anyway the most exciting thing about that reveal is that it leaves February open for a potential Switch 1 general Direct.

Switch 2... Wii U the 3rd... Nothing new or exciting really. Hopefully good games get released for this system to make up for the lack of a new creative console.

Anyone noticed the fine print: Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.

You can tell by the trailer Nintendo is playing safe this gen. Hopefully we learn of the new specs and stuffs by April. Though this is not as good as the Switch 1 reveal, at least now we got legit confirmation that it will be natively backwards compatible with Switch games.

Where’s the innovation here Nintendo?? It was a bit of a let down here but even a meatier switch is worth my money and I’m so happy to be able to continue on with the switch library of games I have. This was just a snippet so maybe there will be some surprises in April. The Mario kart game I saw there was that for sure a new one or same old 8? Ine thing I’m let down with is the removable joy cons I don’t know the switch burned me so bad on joy cons with those flimsy sticks. The switch lites were much better quality I thought. I hope these sticks are durable. The switch could use some sort of feature with the triggers like Sony has that have the different pressure points. Also I really hope we get a good party system and greater online support. I could probably do away with another console if that happens.

Admittedly because nearly everything got leaked I barely felt anything regarding that trailer, I’m just glad it’s finally something other than rumours or leaks. New Mario Kart as well was obvious but it looks neat!

In a way, they have never really leant into the numerical upgrade titles, so that is oddly unique for Nintendo.

Honestly, I am happy with this. I LOVE the Switch. I didn't want to replace it. I would have been happy with this as my console for an exceedingly long time, if not my life, given how many games there are.

I am sure they have a lot more tricks up their sleeves, but confirming it as a bigger and better one is pleasing to me.

Wow, this is a disappointment. Nintendo has NEVER launched a next generation console with such small, iterative changes. Previously every console was significantly different in design and functionality than its predecessor. This is Switch 1.3.

They shadow dropped it! If it weren’t for the leak we would all be totally stunned.

We're all underwhelmed by this reveal because of the leaks. That's what we get for eating up any Switch 2 news that came across the internet. The regular casual audience will be the only ones surprised by this reveal.

Auch... They were clearly still afraid after what happened with the Wii U, so this time around they are playing it safe. Too safe. Which means we are now facing the other side of the medal - a complete lack of innovation and no real sense of wonder and excitement.

The lacklustre name "Switch 2" symbolises the machine perfectly I suppose.

• Very happy the name is indeed Nintendo Switch 2, nobody will be confused that it is a Switch 1 accessory or Pro model (even if the overall design of Switch 2 is very similar to Switch 1).
• A new Mario Kart being the one game shown likely means it will be a launch or launch window title for the Switch 2.
• The Switch 2 experience will last from April through beginning of June, this likely implies a late June or July launch.

I think cause of the leaks all over twitter and apparently being all correct, this was incredibly underwhelming. And that doesn't even look remotely like a next gen Mario kart lol. You sure that's not just 8 again

Ok, only a first impression, but it's extremely underwhelming, starting from the name. It just looks and sounds like something ASUS would do with their ROG Ally line and that's just not Nintendo. And the problem is, the hardware is much weaker than that of a ROG Ally already. Nintendo nowadays thrives and survives off of only its IPs, honestly.

The thing with Playstation is the console are always different, not the same. Does the Playstation 4 look like the Playstation 5? No. Thats why that formula works.

This new console looks like more of a revision than a new next generation console. Many are already familiar with the look of the console that it will not have the same impact on the selling market as the original version. It does not look new.

So, just a tease to quell the absurd rumour mill. Actual reveal not until 2 April. Note that the device looks nothing like some of the "leaks".

I'd like to reiterate I fully expected Nintendo to tease the device and announce a further date for a reveal, and its release was potentially in September. It looks like May could be the month. While I guessed the tease might come at the end of a Direct that we typically get in mid February, it seems Nintendo just wanted to get something out in the face of all the rumours. In hindsight, keeping them separate is better anyway, and the February Direct still might occur and fully reveal Metroid Prime 4. At least we can now breathe!

Is it ok to be underwhelmed now? Looks like the leaked versions, no real innovations that are apparent here other than possible mouse control and magnetic rails. Not sold on that Salmon pink colour (it doesnt age well) and putting an OG Switch next to it to make it look 'much' bigger is a bit cheeky when the OLED is out.

It’s exactly what I was hoping for. I still have a few questions, but it sounds like April 2 (my first boy’s birthday!) will be a great day to learn more.

This is perhaps the most anticlimactic Nintendo hardware reveal ever.

Honestly, I thought the Switch 2 name and logo was some amateurish fan-made effort, but the fact that such a crappy logo is the real thing? Seriously? Here's hoping that it's still "to be confirmed" between now and launch day, and that they come up with something better than what a graphics noob like me can cook up.

This is the most "corporate" I've ever seen Nintendo, and it's disheartening. Yes, the Switch is a fantastic concept done well, but there was potential for so much more in its successor. I mean, where's the camera and microphone on this thing? I was expecting to see the likes of Nintendogs on launch day and in-built chat capability without the need for a separate device and app.

I'm not even sure if I'll grab this at launch, but I guess that may depend on how it handles backwards compatibility from day one.

I was hoping that the leaks were all a red herring, but... wowie. I guess I expected something a touch more ambitious than merely more of the same.

@yuuji77 Yeah but that should tell you how successful the original Switch was. Nintendo didn't want to reveal this yet as the original Switch is still selling very well but people wanted a new more powerful Switch and so a new more powerful Switch they will get. The original Switch reveal is way better cause Nintendo had to really focus on the marketing aspect since the Wii U flopped big time. Since the Switch is still a successful system, this prompt Nintendo to play it safe for one more generation. At least we now know our games we bought for Switch won't be gone to the wayside.

Well i respect your opinion mate. For me, i had a lot of fun with the Playstation 3 generation console, that looks nothing like Playstation 4 or Playstation 5.

Switch 2 has a few slick new designs, magnetic Joycons etc. The rest is a clone of the original switch, just a bigger screen.

@DoubleDate I've literally played PS4 and (upgraded) PS5 versions of the same first party game and thinking.. 'what changed?' And even after playing Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 and Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 to me it was exactly the same game but with a new story and locations.

Where these couple of seconds from a brand new MarioKart had me on the edge of my seat.

Nice, though the kickstand looks easily breakable. Same for those jutting ports to connect the Joycons; those ports remind me of the ports on a desktop Plug-N-Play card. On the potential flip side, this also could mean that Nintendo is intending to release various accessories to plug into those ports

Be honest, the Playstation console looks different than its predessesor, thats the main theme, the whole situation we are now. The experience differs from each gamer. You are talking about the OS system, games, something that hasnt been revealed yet for the Switch 2. I can understand you yeah on that level, but the main thing is that the Playstation consoles are always different on each release.

Well, color me surprised. The thing was actually revealed today. I half-expected the rumor that it was being revealed today to not pan out. After all, Nintendo is notorious for keeping their cards close to their chest and not divulging too much information, if any at all.

That being said, however, when it comes to announcing the next generation of hardware, you'd think they would have made some announcement of when the reveal trailer would drop. Just shadow-dropping the reveal on YouTube is kind of a head-scratcher, if you ask me.

I can't help but wonder if Nintendo had planned to reveal it much later (like, sometime in March), but the flood of leaks, especially from third-party accessory makers like Genki, expedited their plans. After all, we only know about the form factor of the system, not much else.

Happy its an evolution, not a revolution and in line with the now confirmed leaks. Concept wise – for me at least – Switch1 is the perfect console. Improved (hopefully non-drifting) Joycons, backwards compatibility for my huge backlog and more power under the hood is all I need. Also, Nintendo has done iteration before and done it well. Though maybe I am a bit biased in that regard as I started with Nintendo when the Gameboy first came out in '89 and completely skipped the more experimental Wii and DS era. ; )

I have my doubts about that. I am not quite convinced it will reach numbers like the current console. It sold so well because it was something new, something different we didnt see before. Nintendo are trying to imitate that succes again with a very little changed version of its original version. If it were a new design, believe me this comment section would've been very different.

The problem is that too many people believed the so-called "leaks". Most were ludicrous rumours or wild speculation. Actually, I could tag half the users in this comment for believing "leaks".

The problem with even the rare genuine "leak" is they are often incomplete so guess or predict the rest, and usually over do it. It happened with the last big rumour, which proved to be the alarm clock. Before that with the "Switch Pro" nonsense, they were false attributions of the red box and OLED iterations.

With anything online, don't believe it unless it's a direct and official source.

I buy a console for one reason and one reason alone: to play the best new games. So this Switch 2 will be a day one purchase. With a very nice copy of that MarioKart.

But the prospect of buying a new console just because that's the only way to play new games is not inherently thrilling to me. We don't even know what games will be on it yet anyway, so there isn't much to be excited about for me at this stage.

Finally YESS! At this point I just feel the sweet release of relief. It's not a surprise anymore, but it looks every bit as good as it did in the unofficial renders.

They are home consoles FFS. Not portable Hybrids.

You should be looking at the how GameBoy compared to GameBoy Colour, Gameboy Advance to DS, DS to 3DS, then Switch 1 to 2.

@DoubleDate I've been a fan since the 80s, and there's only so much you can do. Also, the controllers playing like a mouse isn't exciting? Also, the SNES wasn't anything radically different. Nor was the Gameboy Advance.

Samething with consoles. I do NOT care at all how it looks. I only care about the games and the way they are played. And both things are almost exactly the same on the PS4 and PS5. But here I see clear differences between Switch and Switch 2. And that only by a 2 min. video.

Sony never cared to create a new OS for those systems, fhats why i never cared so much for Playstation consoles because i know that the experience for me will be like when i played games on the Playstation 3, very little changes apart than the look on the outside.

The teaser itself admittedly doesn't look half as epic as its predecessor's - we have the somehow even sleeker new look, a bigger screen (on par with Deck by now?), an even more adjustable stand iteration and the controllers with what looks like a couple new buttons (the main intrigue of the trailer so far) plus some fancy new connection mechanisms (magnets or somesuch? I wonder if these will hold well, especially during a session like Isaac or Dark Souls😄). As one of the five people who still haven't bought MK8, I can't even tell if the enclosed footage is from a new entry or showcasing the old guard to emphasize the promise of backward compatibility (which, on the other hand, has finally grown some expected footnotes that the comparative hardware measurements seem to align with my earlier suspicions about Labo sets). Same with what looked like another Mario game screenshot - I'm not remotely up to date with the franchise to expertly parse and cross-reference such stuff. What? I have sent at least four Nintendo binge queues to heck this gen as it is.😅 One thing for certain on the whole cross-gen topic is that current joycons will have wireless connectivity at most - but I doubt many people assumed otherwise.

Overall, so far so good but the juice like traditional added gameplay perks (possibly related to the new buttons) and the price/date combo is left for early April, leaving the temporarily semi-jobless Credible Sources to undoubtedly try and milk out a bit more clicks from something like "8K handheld" and "smart home assistant functionality with Charles Martinet's voice" in the remaining weeks. The presentation date itself looks to reaffirm the expectations of an autumn/holiday launch, too. I'll try to weather this torturous wait with barely seventeen hundred currently owned Switch games left to beat - wish me luck.🙀😸

Even if we hadn’t already seen everything revealed here, this reveal trailer would still be underwhelming. As it is, it’s just sad.

The screen bezels are too big, hence why they are comparing with the original switch in the video, and not the OLED version. Sad!!

That was underwhelming. Then again, those pesky leakers already revealed the design prior to the unveiling and it's joy-con mouse-like functionality.

Not a fan of the nearly all-black joy-cons, but at least the Aque Blue & Orange accents are a nice touch. I'm way more curious to what their New pro controller looks like and does since i don't do hand held anymore. Gotta play docked with a better controller(s) And hopefully there's a motion sensor bar. having to deal with another generation of Gyro motion without a reference is going to be laughable.

And yet the Snes was doing well in the 90s, heck even Sega was trowing shades at Nintendo with Sonic the Hedgehog commercials. The Gameboy Advance did make an impact on the handheld market, who doesnt remember Zelda the Minishcap, Golden Sun or Pokemon games. Golden Sun was the best game i played on the GBA.

@Bobb Remember searching for "Wii U" and "Wii" showing up in the results? A new name makes a difference. I hope it does well but the name and design are kind of weak. Not interested in 4K gaming either as those goes take longer to develop and download. I don't see much of a difference nor upgrade here.

Nintendo has probably 1/4th of their soul left in tact these days. lol I'm not expecting anything that shakes up the industry or something that falls in line with what the Wii remote achieved(Metroid Prime 3 being the revolution that it was to the FPS genre, and so much more), or something as exciting as the 3DS launch was.

Their Pro controller will probably look near-identical to the current XBOX clone-pad that's been available since 2016. And guess what? We're still probably going to be stuck with sensor bar-less(Zero reference) for gyro motion. Another generation of motion controls that won't even allow you to use pointer based/cross hair aiming properly. No reference, no dice. It's broken.

And I personally couldn't give a flying squirrel about handheld gaming, to me that just isn't really forward-thinking if it's the sole key feature here, again. It's just an 8" 1080p OLED(or LED) screen with PS4 power. Give me a size adjustable 65-77" Micro-OLED 4K Mixed Reality Screen with Stereoscopic 3D with MR glasses.

@johnedwin It’s actually for the Direct, and it’s actually for April 2. People outside of the US and Canada might get it confused for February 4 because the date is set the American way (MM/DD/YY) and most other countries do DD/MM/YY.

I mean, I'm in and it looks good, but compared to the marketing triumph of the Switch initial reveal, there was nothing in this that told us why this is cool. What makes this worth upgrading? Because it feels like an upgrade. Just worried that they are going to struggle with explaining why people should rush and get one when the market has a lot of competition.

Hey you know what, I'm glad they're not rocking the boat too much. Nintendo found their niche, you don't have to start your library all over again, and it has huge appeal for both kids and won over adults like myself who got off the Nintendo wagon after Gamecube, but was won back over with it's ease of use and fantastic support of third party developers alongside some of the best 1st party Nintendo games since the early 2000's in their last iteration.

Absolutely. Video game consoles had far more character, were a zillion times more unique and exciting during the late 80's and 90's. The names alone...I mean, we got the Sega Dreamcast, Super Nintendo, PlayStation, Genesis, Game Boy, TurboGrafx etc.

Now it's all about slapping the next number at the end of the same name. Something like Nintendo Cosmo would of been a lot more fun. Heck, even Super Switch as semi predictable as that may be.

Its about time the official reveal got here, thats all I will say.

I said in the past that all I really want from Switch 2 is backwards compatibility, a sizeable boost in power and a dock that gives the graphics a boost over handheld. We don't know what the dock will do but it seems we've got the first 2. So I've got what I asked for yet somehow I feel disappointed that it looks so similar. Although I'm sure it'll have something that sets it apart. If it had a 3D screen, surely they would have shown that in the trailer. So we can probably rule that out.

@Brady1138 Agree 100%. Gamecube was also my last Nintendo console before the Switch. Life has gone on and now just chilling with it on the sofa playing in handheld while everyone else is doing something different is just marvelous. The time for a purely stationary console is – for me at least – over. Good times.

Well, we'll be getting a new Switch 2 Pro Controller which they'll most likely unveil in April. But i wouldn't be surprised if it's similar to the XBOX360-like Pro controller that we've got now. I'm not expecting something unique, fresh and revolutionary like we got with NES, SNES, N64, even the GameCube to an extent & Wii Remote & Nunchuck. At leas the Joy-cons have that new mouse-like motion functionality, that's at least something for docked play I guess.

@MrCarlos46 That's exactly why they might have opted to include the fine print, because they might not go to the trouble of creating a new accessory until they launch a Ring Fit 2 for Switch 2.

Specifically for Ring Fit Adventure, it's possible they only include compatibility if you already own a Switch 1 Joycon. But we probably won't know for sure until April.

Hmmm. Only showing a teaser to a sequel to their biggest selling game, something that sold the equivalent to the population of a small country on the old Switch. Seemed smart to me. Plus knowing the way they work, plus the laws of diminishing returns, their games always look much more polished upon release.

I am ready to hit pre-order. I wasn't through the roof impressed by the trailer. I'm just through the roof that it's here and happening. My switch is dying so I'll need to replace it soon. We're here folks, we finally made it.

Why? Because most of their franchises teeter towards being cartoony' and at least for me, i don't need the next big mario game looking like a Pixar film with PS6 power years down the line. it's going to be diminishing returns with their next console after Switch 3. This will be the last substantial leap for Nintendo in power and that's that.

After watching the trailer for a third time, i am glad that they stayed with the "switch" formula we know and love. And i am glad that we can play all older switch games.
I only hope to see what this device is capable off. Showcase a tec demo that maxes out the performance of this thing.

@Waveboy I have actually high hopes for the new NVidia SoC that is supposed to be in the Switch 2.
Since it was specifically developed for the Switch 2.

You have to remember that the Tegra X1 SoC was never meant for handheld devices. It was originally developed for the NVidia shield, which was a so called Mini-computer connected to Power at all times and with a Chassis large enough for proper cooling.

The Tegra X1 SoC can run at 2GHz on the old NVidia Shield, but on the Nintendo Switch it had to be dialed back to around 1,2 GHz when docked and dialed back even further down to 600-700MHz in handheld mode. All due to cooling challenges and having enough battery life in handheld mode.

So the Tegra X1 is severely held back in the current Switch and it's frankly a miracle that the current games manage to run on the Switch as they do. Mostly thanks to the 4GB onboard RAM.

At that time of the Switch launch the Tegra X1 SoC was already 4 years old.

Sheesh, there be a lot of impatience along with a few not happy that the system's not "different". The hybrid approach works dang well, why kill 1-to-1 backwards compatibility (both in software and probably general experience) just for the sake of being different?

The Switch brought true current-gen console gaming out of the home and on the road. They don't want to pull another Wii U scenario. People like the Switch, it does a good job printing money, let them go to a similar formula the competition does. Be happy that your current Switch collection will continue to work through te next generation. Who knows, maybe online will last longer for the Switch as opposed to the U and 3DS.

The Switch 2 looks very premium. I like the new look of the Joycons.

Why is June out of the question? Switch was revealed in October followed by the reveal direct in January and released in March. Switch 2 revealed in January, followed by the direct in April (also 3 months later) which would give you a June release if Nintendo follows the same pattern

So they used the original switch for comparison to make it more drastic. It’s barely different to the oled. I’m not too bothered though. I just want more juice so that Minecraft runs better than 2fps. Even S&V is less jerky.

No specs? No launch date other than 2025 which is totally weird. This makes me think now end of the year with that direct being April. No pre order date. No games other than maybe a Mario cart which really looks not much different than the current. Other than date of the direct, we knew all this.

This is great. The name suggests Nintendo read the room and knew that a creative name would confuse consumers and lead to another Wii U.

As much as I'd have loved something super creative and more Nintendoish, that was not going to be a win for them. They were understandably reluctant to put out a new console because of the Switch's success, so the answer was clearly another Switch.

I honestly have no complaints, just based on the announcement itself!

@Porco Most people? You speak for yourself. I detach the joycon all the time. It’s much easier to play that way when I want to rest my wrists. It’s reminiscent of the Wii+nunchuck controller. It also allows for spontaneous multiplayer sessions, when out and about.

Switch 2 is a bit of a boring name but it's very clear name, nintendo obviously learned from the Wii U.

Exactly what I wanted, surprised that it was pretty much a straight upgrade from the Switch though. Nintendo haven't really done that since the Super Nintendo for their home consoles.

Feels like a Switch Pro rather than a new console imo. They changed the joycons to magnetic so people can just buy new controllers and not use the other ones? Kinda greedy seeing that it's just a console sequel and not so new console.

Yup, this is just a Switch 2 alright. Kind of underwhelming, but the mouse functionality might have potential. That Mario Kart game doesn't look very interesting from first glance, but they might be hiding something.

@Antraxx777 it's a novelty feature and completely unnecessary. put it this way: if switch 2 didn't have joycons and the hardware was one piece, but in exchange you got a proper d-pad and nintendo shaved off $50 from the MSRP, i don't think many people would complain. also, that doesn't mean there couldn't be optional joycon accessories released for it for people such as yourself (they wouldn't physically connect to the base unit but could be used independently). i'm sure nintendo has the data and i'd be surprised if even 20% of users would use the joycons detached. when the system is docked, people are far more likely to use a proper controller for comfort. but for marketing reasons and the switch 2 being an evolution of the what came before it, not to mention backwards compatibility reasons, i suppose nintendo felt it was better to go this route.

Well that was the biggest load of nothing that I've ever seen.
Essentially they promised to announce the successor to the Switch before April, and now they have said "OK here you go: it will be called the Switch 2".
No words, no specs, no games, no functionalities. The most unimportant thing about it is the way it looks, and that is literally the only thing they have revealed here. Even people saying "magnetic joy cons" are just joining their own dots. What an anticlimax.

Annoying the leaks showed us pretty much everything. Wish there was something that expanded upon the design like dual screen play, but I guess a better more powerful version of the best selling console since PS2 isn't a bad thing. Name is a bit boring, but understandable to avoid the Wii U confusion. Just wish they would at least have done something more interesting with the logo. Even PlayStation change to logo entirely every generation so it feels distinct.

Also I am well and truly sick of Mario Kart so if that's their big launch title then it better be something gigantic like an open world. MK 8 keeps selling because it is perennially a good stopgap to keep the 6-year-olds entertained. It's just a good value game to have on your console. But in my opinion, putting around courses on rails like a theme park rollercoaster is not something which sells too many consoles on its own.

@Axecon PH Brazil, the journalist/insider that gave the Switch 2 delays news, has stated in a recent video and in live he covered Switch 2 reveal, stated Nintendo plans to do a Nintendo Direct in february focused on Switch software.

At last. Sad to say I'm slightly underwhelmed as I was hoping for more innovations. Mouse functions sound interesting though, lemmings reboot anyone?

I am completely sold. The Nintendo Switch 2 is truly a massive upgrade. Bigger screen (8-inch LCD, if possible), two USB-C ports... top and bottom, improved Joy-cons/Mouse-cons, 4K DLSS. I cannot wait to buy it this year.

With the Switch 2’s reveal also came an official render which we’ll likely see for its box, except will the box have the same dimensions as the current Switch/Switch OLED box or will there be something bigger?

Oh for sure! BC with physical and digital Switch Uno games was a crucial feature for me, right up there with "No Region Locking." Nintendo of course is still mum on that story. Here's hoping that our Switch Deux's will be able to play cartridges from any part of the world, and that we will be able to use e-shop accounts in different regions, too.

I would literally cry if I couldn't buy Japan-exclusive Arcade Archives games or import Japanese cartridges anymore.

It's just such a relief the Deuce even HAS a cartridge slot, the way so many people could care less about physical media lately. I'm old-fashioned and I like that physical option, and I'll continue to game happily now. ^_^

Glad the cat is finally out of the bag. So now we all know what it officially looks like and the official name. I'm sure they'll reveal more than just games at the Direct in April. As a lifelong Nintendo fan they've got me already. I'll probably go old school and line up at my local Walmart the morning it launches, barring a new pandemic or something that is.

nintendo was mot even vapabale to push 64gb cardridges due to expenses.

how on on earth is this cardridge system future proof from start? do we have to buy 1 tb sd cards for digital downloads only.
are we also gonna be slaves to digital only also like on ps5 and xbox live. pay so much money because there are no other options.

i think in this concept switch duex (as you call it) is bound to fail in long term sales.

@Teksette I’m hoping it is region locked, and I’m sure it will be since our switch uno cartridges will be compatible with it. I’m really excited to see if any games get performance boost as well. It’ll be nice to replay a lot of my switch library with boosted performance.
I’ve always gotten physical games until I got a PS5 but with how convenient Nintendo’s cartridges are I’ll always go physical on the Nintendo games. Besides, they retain their value fairly well!

@jfp It’s absolutely nuts that we will soon have a handheld gaming device on par with Xbox Series S (reportedly). I grew up with the Gameboy too and it’s just… madlad levels of insanity what we can have now.

I like that it's backwards compatible. Most of my games were digital purchases. If Nintendo lets me re-download them on the Switch 2, I'm in. If they want me to buy them all over again, I'm out until we see a compelling new games lineup

I will likely buy this day 1. However first impressions are that this looks very uncomfortable to play in hand held.

I am glad it has backwards compatibility. I will probably upgrade whenever they release a lite version in however many years, and i dont mind waiting with my backlog.

I hear what you are saying, friend - game sizes keep getting bigger, in some cases beyond what can be practically stored on physical media. Or the big media is available, but publishers won't squander that precious little bit of profit margin to use it, and instead put a 16GB game on a 4GB cartridge and make us download the rest.
In the long run, I totally agree, everything eventually will go all-digital and probably all-subscription, around the time I'll be too old and grouchy to care!
But, in this next Switch era, Nintendo would have been absolutely roasted in Japan if they abandoned physical. So for now, at least, we have it, and I'm glad. Plus there's some glimmers of hope: AI-upscaling will reduce file sizes, hopefully Nintendo can keep up their compression magic, and who knows, maybe physical media costs will decrease enough to help.

Then there's also the fact that some people playing Nintendo consoles are like me, and don't need the hugest, flashiest, most cinematic games out there - I'm content to play 2D games and old arcade-game ports most of the time. It's nice to know that modest-sized games can still be published physically on Switch 2.

As for you sales projection, I tend to agree with you, the OG Switch was a sensation with its novel (at the time) hybrid concept, and then covid lockdowns drove up demand for games, too. There's over 140 million Switches out there - not all of that player base will want to upgrade, but many will since they can keep their libraries, and if the tempting games are there, those magical 1st-party Nintendo hits as well as some ambitious ports of recent-past PC/PS/XBox games. A good chunk of us are Nintendo-only owners, who never had the chance to play Elden Ring or Baldur's Gate 3.

Plus Nintendo has had success with iterative "families" of systems in the past: GB > GBC > GBA and DS > DSi > 3DS, so I expect Switch Deux will do ok, even if it is not the astounding hit the OG Switch was. There's still a lot we don't know about the Deuce, so it's hard to predict. Time will tell!

I still feel we don’t really know much about it. The only thing the trailer revealed that wasn’t already leaked was Mario kart. How much will it cost? What battery life does it have? How powerful is it compared to the original? Why do you want to drag it out till April to tell us this kind of stuff? So many questions

@Thwomp_Stomper Highly unlikely Nintendo is going back to region-locking their consoles after removing it with the Switch.

These days modern consoles are region free, and we can expect the same for future Nintendo consoles (except in mainland China if they don’t pull out of there after the shutdown of NSO in the country and the Tencent Switch eShop).

The closest they might do tho is give Splatoon 4 the same Splatfest region system that determines it by where the cartridge was bought similar to Splatoon 2, except this time actually grouping Australia with Europe instead of the US.

I am worried about the joycon connection. Those pins look highly exposed. If you can touch them, you may introduce static electricity into the connector and blow up the entire system.

Being on socks, while using the console in table mode in a room with carpet seems to be a very bad idea.

@PALversusNTSC we also live in an era where diminishing returns from those 100-150gb games have never been more apparent, and a popular hybrid that pushes PS4 level fidelity is going to put that in harsh relief. You go to a Nintendo console for Nintendo games, and they don't make 100-150gb games. Also, if Sony and MS are making hybrid consoles too, they'll be forced to compete directly with Nintendo for the first time since the GC, and (most, not me) people don't want three different handhelds. I'm not predicting anything here, but it will be really interesting.

A D-pad was clearly too much to ask for. 🙄

I'm only interested in the new Pro controller for docked play, and what it can bring to the table in terms of new unique features. And if there's no motion sensor bar, than the joy-cons are practically useless when playing on a TV.
Here's what I'm hoping for with the new pro controller >

• Unique Nintendo-y design, instead of the cut and paste XBOX 360-like Switch Pro controller.
• Lower input lag
• Compatible with Motion Sensor bar(Reference)
• Improved D-pad accuracy
• Super HD Rumble - (An evolution of the DualSense's haptics)
• Adaptive triggers - (Also an evolution of the Dualsene's triggers)
• A couple of other unique features that bring something new, fresh and exciting to the table that we've never seen before.

@SillyG You're in luck with the microphone, as it's been leaked for a while now a built-in one is returning. It does seem to be on the tablet and not one of the Joy-Cons, for whatever reason (I think it's to the right of the cartridge slot, which they conveniently never showed in the teaser, but it can be glimpsed on the official website), but it appears to be there. As for a camera, there's nothing concrete backing the idea, but it is commonly theorized that the USB-C port on the top of the system was implemented for accessories like a camera. It'd be nice if it pans out - unlike other things they've done in the past, such as the News and Weather channels on Wii, smartphones don't effectively render cameras obsolete as long as they can leverage them in games and take advantage of the options provided by a controller.

I feel like everyone here's forgotten how Nintendo has always done iterative successors. The only time they haven't was with the N64 and GameCube, and even then, it's not like the GameCube was a radical departure from the N64 era (plus, the Nintendo 128 just doesn't hit the same). This feels very much in the spirit of the 3DS in particular, since the form factor is extremely similar. And sure - on a surface level, it doesn't seem like a big step forward. It is a generational leap for Nintendo, though, in terms of power. The mouse functionality flew over a lot of people's heads (the Joy-Con acted like actual mice in the trailer, with the straps serving as their tails), but I think it's going to be far more than a simple gimmick most games ignore. It can allow touchscreen games to be repurposed more for docked, opens up possibilities for PC ports, gives Nintendo potential for series like Pikmin, Mario Maker/Paint, and Kid Icarus, and is probably the best way of replicating pointer controls with the Switch concept. And that's not to mention we've seen nothing of what the system experience is like. If the jump from DSi to 3DS is any indication, we could have a far more substantial user experience on our hands despite the original Switch foundation remaining intact. The C button still has an ambiguous use. There may be other features that haven't been detailed yet that leaks have glossed over - it took a long time for mouse functionality to be figured out, so for all we know they'll have a bit more up their sleeves.

It's fine to be disappointed with how little was shown today, but to assume that there's nothing more to the Switch 2 is definitely underestimating Nintendo. They just put out an alarm clock of all things - they're still experimenting and doing things differently. For all we know, they're going to create specialized controllers for different games with the Switch 2 that warrant some difference in tech - something that wouldn't be on any leaker's radar. It's just hard to imagine what could reinvent the wheel these days given every new idea Nintendo's gone through, but if nothing else, there is promising stuff here.

Sure would be nice to get analogue triggers again, though...

I've been begging for a trackball and spinner controller for years now, to best play classic arcade games like Centipede, Missle Command, Tempest, Arkanoid, and the like. I think the Switch mouse (Swouse?) could be a decent compromise for those games!

@Antraxx777 I mean... yes, of course. I am aware of exclusivity but my point is that the gamble is that this will be enough. It is just an iterative upgrade. Given that there is now competition in this market (Steam Deck, Asus, Lenovo, MSI etc.) and rumored future competition from the likes of Microsoft), it means entirely relying on on first or second party games or exclusive ports. I bought a lot of games either on Switch specifically or bought AGAIN titles so I could play remotely. For many non-Nintendo titles, it is likely that I now have an option of how to play third party games remotely... and Hey, I may be totally wrong and people do see this as the natural upgrade path from their OG Switch, especially if they have large libraries. At the same time, its USP has now been imitated.

@weisske Insufficient data. The Nintendo Switch 2 is a 9th generation console. The system is completely different, triple the RAM, newer gameplay mechanics, and an exclusive 4K DLSS.

Here are many ways the Switch 2 Joy-Con optical sensor could work:

1. Mouse capabilities
2. IR pointing for if they even bring Wii to NSO
3. Proximity sensor to detect when the Joy-Cons are attached

@jfp Agreed I think Nintendo, Steam, and even Microsoft are showing the days of large box consoles are fading, people like versatile play options (and not in with Nunchucks cough Wii cough🤣)
